Just saw a thread below where someone asked about old people driving with pets in their laps, but why do old people always drive so slow??? Also, why do they do so in the left lane on the interstate? Thoughts, Opinions?

Old Nick Swardson joke had the best line about that:

"Like, you're OLD, you're running out of time, you gotta MOVE."

I remember that. Also he said that he wants to drive really fast when he gets old so that his grandkids can say "Yea, my gramps died. How? Flipped his lambo."

I'm sure it has something to do with their eye sight, hearing, and reflexes not being as good as they used to be.

For slow driving, I think it may boil down to eyesight being not as good as when younger. Then combine that with slower reflexes and that could be a reason or two.

As for driving in the left land, I have no clue. Makes no sense to drive in the left lane if you're not even going to do the speed limit, and even if rolling down the slab at 70, it's just dumb. Get the hell out of the way and let the speeders have their lane to pass.

We become jaded. We've just seen, heard, and talked about all the places that we're trying to get and we're just not that excited to get there.

If you're in a big hurry, you should leave earlier. And stay off my lawn

Vision problems usually have a lot to do with it.

Coincidentally, I know a lady with early stage dementia who's still driving. The doctor recently told her not to, but IDK what kind of legal authority he has to enforce it. It's tough because she's a widow with no close family nearby. If she can't drive she has no one to take her places.

Because I don't see so well anymore and my reflexes are slower. I do tend to avoid the left lane of the interstate, so I got that going for me. Of course, traffic out here only moves at about 12 MPH anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Slower driving on the left lane on the interstate is because up until RELATIVELY recently, it was not taught or accepted practice to generally stay in the right lane unless passing.

Signs indicated as such have only come up on Louisiana interstates in the past 20 years.

I heard several older relatives and co-workers about 20-30 years ago say, "I can drive in whatever lane I feel like."

Old people don't have the sense of time and urgency to be somewhere like the rest of us do.

at a certain age you realize no matter how fast you drive you dont get there any minutes earlier that really matters

plus slower recognition and reaction times, so its a good safety practice to factor in
