Why do most pet names end in "y" sound?

It seems like people commonly name their pets with a y, ey, ie ending.
Sadie, goldie, molly, etc. Or is that for mostly female pets?
Throw some names out there for discussion.

My dog’s name is Aspen. In my group of friends there’s also Leyla, Bob, Rider, Lakota, Jack, Baxter, and Leo. Probably some others I’m forgetting.

IF you do any research on dog training, it will tell you that dogs respond best to names with 2 syllables and end with a hard vowel.
