re: Why do diesel driving baws love to let their engines idle?

There are lots of reasons that it is preferential to idle a diesel than shut it off and start it right back up.
Odds are very few of the people doing that actually know the benefits to doing it though. They do it for the same reason the brothers leave their music up loud as shite while they go inside the store. They want everyone else to know they have a diesel/big speakers. Exact same behavior.

Are there circles where one gains cred by letting such a thing be known?

What if they need to chase crim and the starter fails?
I think you should be more worried about when your tax dollars goes to freeloaders

Let me explain. My tractor that looks like this burns 0.7 gallons per hour while idling. So now figure that in a F250.
I want that tractor and I live in a townhouse in Smyrna Ga. Not sure what, but I can find SOMETHING to do with it.

quote:Well you can stop grinding, because leaving the car idling IS conserving. As often as a cop gets out of his vehicle, the wear and tear costs from stopping and starting all the time would dwarf the cost of a little bit of gas. Not to mention the seconds saved when they have to rush off somewhere.
What really grinds my gears is when I see a cop car just idling in a parking spot outside a business. I'm paying for that shite and I'd appreciate if you try and conserve a little bit.

quote:first of all, what engine doesn't generate "large amounts of heat"? Secondly, any engine that requires the cooling system to continue working after shutoff, is designed so the cooling system continues.
Diesel engines generate large amounts of heat.
Needs idle time to help cool every thing down.
Shutting the oil off of your red hot turbo would not be good for longevity

A prolonged idle keeps oil on bearings in turbos. Something like that

cause that's gonna make such a huge difference in your tax burden.

Maybe I just want my truck to stay nice and cool while it’s hot as balls outside, and I don’t pay for the diesel in that company truck so I’d prefer to leave it running and keep the cabin nice and cool. And you can’t take it out of park unless the key fob is inside so you aren’t stealing it.

It's against the law to leave an unoccupied vehicle idling in public, and if it's stolen in that condition, the insurance is void.

What pisses me off even more than that is when those dumbasses are typing on their laptop while driving down the street.
If it is unsafe to text I am sure typing out an email is too.

It's a common practice among police to allow their cars idle, especially during the summer months. The summer sun combined with a hot engine make the hoods extremely hot.
If a cop happens to detain an a-hole perp, the easiest way to get a resisting arrest charge is to make the perp place his hands flat on the extremely hot hood. When the perp yanks his hands back, it is an immediate handcuff and place under arrest situation. (if the cop is in the mood and the perp is an a-hole).
At least, this is what I've been told by three different police officers.

You do realize they are not doing that just for the hell of it right? There is equipment in there that has to load up when they start. If they get out and have to get to a call, they just jump in and go otherwise they will have to wait for things to boot up, etc.

Yep, this is the reason so many kids are dying in hott cars. But rules are rules. I’ll be damned if my car gets janked and it’s not covered.
