re: Why do dealerships want $120+ to change an air filter?

Dealer Snake Oil is only harvested from the finest pedigreed snakes who must meet exacting standards to receive the coveted PURE snake oil approval seal.
This is the reason it costs $199 instead of $9.99 at the auto parts store.

B/c people are ignorant of how easy it is to change an air filter. Firestone wanted to change mine for like 50 dollars last time I was in for an oil change.

Meh. I changed my oil for my first 15 years of driving and just don't care to do it anymore.
The $15 I'm saving twice per year isn't worth the hassle of me driving to dispose of the oil. I usually get my tires rotated at the same time too.

Fortunately there's a YouTube video for just about every automotive project. Learned that trying to replace a fog lamp on an Outback.

I put a Fumoto quick drain valves on one of my cars. Lets me change the oil in no time with no mess.

Paid 199 for a 20 minute teeth cleaning. Places where you only go once a year tend to rip you off because you think yourself well it’s just once a year so eff it

$100+ on labor for less than 5 minutes of work! Come on people
What kind of vehicle? Was it for the engine air filter or the cabin air filter? It makes a difference. The cabin air filter is usually a lot harder to get to and will require more labor time.

Yeah, I used to be a change my own oil guy, but I get coupons from the Ford dealer and they change the oil in my F150 for $35. The oil and filter alone would cost me that.

Same. Mine had oil, tire rotation and new wiper blades for $50 last time I had mine done.

Most of you probably don't even realize your vehicle has a cabin air filter. The labor time on those are usually .5 hours or more which would lend to the reason it would cost $100 to change.
Edit: I don't work for a dealership and I'm not a mechanic, but I do work in the industry.

I better question is why does an adult need to pay a someone to change an air filter.

Same reason they want to charge 120 for Nitrogen in your tires. I just laughed at the salesman.

C'mon, even a Hillary voter isn't that stupid.

Most thinking a air filter can usually be changed in 15 minutes have not looked under the hood of many modern cars. I would bet $120 the average person couldn't locate the air filter in my wifes' car in 15 minutes,, it would take longer than that just to remove the shrouding to even see the filter.

This. Went to get the trunk latch on my Toyota sedan fixed AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER (that will be important later in this post), my friendly service tech comes in the waiting room and tells me I need a slew of maintenance which will run only +/-$2,500. My vehicle had about 75K miles on it so I decline. I drove that car for another 135K miles without having ever gotten that “maintenance” done. Shocking, I know...
As far as dealerships are concerned, they are the worst offenders. I knew a guy whose family owns several dealerships. He said they make a majority of their money on used cars and maintenance - not new vehicles. So they’re going to always up-sell the frick out of you on maintenance. They know the average customer doesn’t know shite about car care and maintenance. Pro tip: don’t take your car to a dealership for maintenance if you can avoid it. They’re fricking jackals.

Can you really put a price tag on clean filtered air?

In my two years in Louisiana I noticed stay high number of cars stalled out on the side of the road and I wondered if it was the weather.
And then after a year I realized it was people who thought they could fix cars themselves.
