re: Whatever happened to AMWAY?

Posted by Rappin4Tay on 9/26/25 at 2:11 pm to
There is book about it in PDF format that you can read online. It's written by a guy who was heavily involved in Amway. The real money was in recording and selling motivational (i.e., self help) tape recordings and speaking at Amway events. It has been several years since I read it, but it was compelling.

It definitely was/is a cult.

Yes. This is the point.

This. Went to get the trunk latch on my Toyota sedan fixed AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER (that will be important later in this post), my friendly service tech comes in the waiting room and tells me I need a slew of maintenance which will run only +/-$2,500. My vehicle had about 75K miles on it so I decline. I drove that car for another 135K miles without having ever gotten that “maintenance” done. Shocking, I know...

As far as dealerships are concerned, they are the worst offenders. I knew a guy whose family owns several dealerships. He said they make a majority of their money on used cars and maintenance - not new vehicles. So they’re going to always up-sell the frick out of you on maintenance. They know the average customer doesn’t know shite about car care and maintenance. Pro tip: don’t take your car to a dealership for maintenance if you can avoid it. They’re fricking jackals.

If you have full collision insurance, health insurance, and a job where you wouldn't have lost wages from hospitalization, then what is the advantage to UM?

Collision only covers damages to the vehicle - not you physically.

Do you want to be responsible for paying your health insurance deductible and co-pay's when someone hurts you? That's what UM covers.

What if you're in the hospital for 6 months and cannot do your job at all? Or suffer a traumatic brain injury and can no longer work?

It's these types of things that UM is for. It's relatively cheap to have added to your policy. Worth it in my opinion.
Fark board. Found the OT Lounge and enjoyed the banter. Some very interesting topics are discussed here.

Hells to the fricking no.
A family member of mine has worked at FedEx for almost 30 years. Some of the stories he has heard was that Fred was paying for fuel with credit cards, sold his Rolex, and was even asking pilots to put jet fuel purchases on their credit cards. He was also paying these pilots for a time in FedEx stock since he didn't have enough money to meet payroll. Another story is that some of the pilots were having to avoid repo men. Crazy stuff.

Those pilots were eventually handsomely rewarded.

We need some type of name for these these nouveau, intentionally misspelled cutesy names. I guess trashy will work for now.

I just wish I could say to these people "this is a human being you're naming, not a f-ing pet."

Geico wipes the shite out of them.

GEICO will also get you sued. You rear end someone who incurs $2,000 in medical bills, GEICO will make their best offer of $2,000 - $2,600 to settle the case. Then a suit is filed and you get to answer interrogatories, be deposed, and be hassled in general.

State Farm, in my experience, was generally pretty good about making a good faith effort to fairly settle most cases. Less hassle for their insureds.

I agree. I'm talking about injuries/death though.

Sure, my health insurance will cover some of the medical bills if myself and/or family are hurt in an accident, but not all. It also won't pay for lost wages, non-economic damages, etc. That's what I have UM/UIM for.

Also, Mississippi stacks UM/UIM coverage. So if you have a $100K/$300k UM/UIM policy and 3 cars, you will have $300K/$900k in coverage if shite hits the fan (which is only offset by the amount of insurance the tortfeasor has). I'm not sure if LA has stacking.

It's just piece of mind for me. And I also don't have a teenage driver yet. I might change my tune when it gets to that point.

I was given advice to lower daughters limits by agent?

I'm assuming the insurance company wanted to limit their exposure if/when your daughter gets in a wreck and leave YOU exposed to an excess judgment in the event your daughter seriously injures someone else.

Agents also love it when you don't purchase Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage (again, so YOU can pay the price if someone hits your daughter and doesn't have insurance).

They'd rather have you exposed as opposed to them. Insurance companies (i.e. profit seeking corporations) are not looking out for your best interests.

Raise your limits and make sure you get corresponding UM/UIM coverage.

I agree with this. The whole "gig/contract" economy has made many people more risk averse to owning. Good luck if you're a homeowner and ever on the receiving end of a pink slip from your employer.
