Why do collision centers take so long for repairs?

My daughter got hammered in the rear ( )..no pics

Car was still drivable and didn't look that bad. Damage to the rear bumper, trunk, and one rear side panel. Shop has had it 3 weeks already and estimated to finish by end of this week.

We have a rental car so I'm not desperate to get her car back, just wondering wtf takes so long actually. (I know they have to remove damaged parts, replace, paint, etc. but a month for $1800 worth of damage seems excessive.

Sounds like you need to use a different collision center next time. My son's truck had $5,000 worth of damage recently and I had the truck back in 2 weeks.

Insurance and shipping of parts. Plus they have to get that labor charge.

I am sure it wasn't the first time and definitely won't be the last time.

Back log? I imagine the first week is ordering parts...if that soon. Probably would be a bad body shop if they didn't have other customers

Just had mine repaired. Brought it in for original estimate, scheduled appointment. Guy told me it was likely they would find additional damage once they got into it which they did. Initially told me about two weeks, ended up being three with the 4th holiday and extra damage.

Find somewhere else next time. Cajun Collision in BR was way quicker than other places I called and did excellent work.

Want it done right?

You could always bring it to some cheap place, they got it done fast but it looks like shite...

Must have some actual unibody damage in addition to the bolt on stuff.

Collision center doesnt order parts until you drop off the car. So figure the first week is waiting for parts to come in. Then when the body shop starts taking things apart, its not uncommon to find additional damage that wasn't on the adjuster's original estimate. So they have to get authorization from insurance company so that extra work can be added on, which may or may not require waiting for insurance adjuster to go to the repair shop to authorize additional work, depending on how much hidden damage there was.

backlog is the absolute correct answer. A few places will tell you they can't start for several days or weeks but not most.

The long delays experienced with collision repairs and virtually ANYTHING related to replacement parts...is due the industry "improvement" of "just in time shipping/distribution", dating back over 20 years ago. I.E., in order to "reduce costs" {just who's costs were actually REDUCED...is open to debate}...whereas replacement parts are no longer housed on site, nor in local distribution sites, nor in regional distribution sites...but ONLY in national and sometimes OVERSEAS distribution sites !

Yep. In the Western Hemisphere, for example, all OE Mercedes parts come from Vance, AL. It's crazy the addresses in all kinds of BFE locations that come out of there.
