I worked at a welding/machine shop to put myself through college. At 18-22 years old I was paid $1.00/hr than the 40+ year old guys. Owner wasn't hesitant to explain why:
"He doesn't stop and take a smoke and look at the steel he's laid out. He doesn't stop and take a smoke and look at the rig after he tacks it up. He doesn't stay out on the dock for a smoke after unloading steel from a truck. You stop smoking on my time and I'll bump your pay." Some guys did.
Irrelevant, like I said earlier I don’t smoke but I use to. I also paid for my own college with work and back then I smoked, as did several friends of mine. There were lazy asses that didn’t smoke. I feel like y’all are regurgitating the same made up lines we’ve seen on here for years. 90% of the smokers I know are very good workers. I don’t know anyone that lights up every 10 minutes at work and just stands there. Y’all are drama queens. The 2 worst employees I have to deal with are non smokers, they are by far the weakest link in the chain at our workplace, and probably the only 2 non tobacco users aside from me.

We timed my old boss on all her cigarette breaks for a week.
She ended up spending 6 hours outside smoking. That is basically an entire day off every week.
God that job sucked.

It’s just so pathetic that without that little cancer stick you can’t handle a stressful situation or go 15 minutes without one. I just can’t stand that addictive personality type. Same goes with people that have to drink themselves stupid every damn day after work.
Sounds like you might be self evaluating.

Didn't Larry Hagman used to do that?

I used to smoke and I thought it was bull shite as well. It was basically an excuse to get out for a few minutes. I wasn't complaining at the time.

You seem judgmental as hell.
You don't know what other people are going through or what happened in their lives to lead to their addictions.
I think cigarettes are disgusting FWIW.

This reminded me of the office bitch that I worked with..She complained about it not being fair..The smokers told her that it wasn't fair that she got out of any type of lifting or manual labor in the department. There was no more bitching from her..

Smoking the occasional cigar as a hobby isn’t a problem, but smoking cigarettes on a daily (more so on a hourly) basis is a sign of weakness and laziness.

Smokers and religious ppl are the worst.

Finally a thread I can get behind.

the smokers I work with are nothing like what’s portrayed in here. They all work hard and seldom take breaks.
I'm calling bullshite on this right here.

I've found smokers to be generally less intelligent than non-smokers. so I'm fine with them contributing less than others.

Some years ago, a colleague and I were making a sales call to an office/plant complex in Houston. As we walked up to the office there were a man and woman outside the front door smoking. We walked in and found the purchasing manager nearby and as we were making introductions we heard someone screaming, back at the front door, Turns out the owner came through the door just after us and found his employees loitering outside smoking and he tore into them like a banshee because he “wasn’t paying them to smoke”. He followed them down the hallway barking and cussing them. When he settled down he came into the PM’s office and apologized to us for what we had just seen but he clarified he was not sorry for what he said to his employees.

Currently sit by a guy at work that takes roughly 15 smoke breaks a day. When he is at his desk he is looking at his phone or the internet. Manager doesn't say shite to him. shite burns my arse up

Subtle “I work in a sweatshop” brag?

Just take "smoke breaks" like they do.

My dad said the really smart/lazy workers on a crew when he was a kid would roll their own cigarettes.
Lazy?
Maybe, certainly eventually as it steals your wind.
