They suck mostly because no journalism is involved. They just talk and report whatever they are given to put on air.

Headline News
I forgot to mention this, but my local cable operator, Callais Cable, in the 1980’s and 90’s used Headline News as their outlet for short community news clips overriding the feed at :55 past the hour so everything on Headline news was scripted or timed to a T for local insertion.
They also used Headline News to air Parish Council Meetings, Football Games, and Telethons until they were able to add enough channels with digital cable.
Before they ran new lines and added digital channels they maxed out at only 36 channels. The new lines featured Fiber to a Node and expanded the line up to about 60 analog channels. Digital eventually came around 2001 or 2002.
At that point in 2003, that is when cable modem technology slowly started to come about. It was reported that Callais could push maybe 45 Mbps to each node which would be shared with a few thousand customers if they launched cable internet, but that was enough to scare Latelco/Mobiletel into purchasing Callais Cable because of their strangle hold on the telecom business in South Lafourche with wired phone service, wireless and dial up internet through Mobiletel.
Eventually Mobiletel would sell its wireless business to Alltel. What was left of Callais Cable and Latelco became Vision Communications and is now part of REV.
That is your history lesson on telecommunications in South Lafourche.

none of them really tell you what is actually happening. They put whatever spin they think their viewers want on it. It's why somebody who watches CNN and somebody who watches Fox could watch coverage of the same even for an hour and both end up claiming something completely different happened. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. Hell compare the poli board and reddit. Most on either forum have no idea wtf is actually going on.

because there is only ¼ hour of news and they have to spread it out for 24.

Is it really 24 hour news if 12 hours of it is commercials?

Can you imagine if Fox had International Hour on in the middle of the day? All the old people would take naps until 5 pm

30 years ago I never would have believed how much news and information I now get from comedians on comedy/news shows.
John Oliver does the best job of that in the weekly format.
John Stewart, Seth Meyers, Bill Maher, etc etc.
Was watching Stewart’s show from last night and he’s covering Trump’s speech in front of the reflecting pool and all he has to do is play a couple of excerpts of Trump trying to talk and it gets halarious laughter from the audience. He doesn’t ever have to make a joke about it. The joke is an 80 yr old trying to pretend he’s smart enough to be president.
Trump said yesterday that’s he’s kept all his campaign promises. He’s kept so many promises that he has actually kept more promises than he made.
He literally said that. Can’t get that on Newsmax and Fox.

Turn off the TV and live life. You don’t need to know everything instantly

Same reason sports talk radio shows suck. You can only discuss the same thing over and over again for so long.

I don’t know anyone under 70 that still watches anything on Fox News.
I don’t know anyone at all that watches CNN or MSNBC.
None of them are actual news channels. They are news commentary channels. And God help you if your life is so boring to find any of that interesting.

Because there is only 1 hour of newsworthy news most days. The rest is just noise.

Because they are entertainment. If there is a change they are excited. If socialists and islamists take over the USA, they will be excited.
