Funroe Newspaper ponders the question.

quote:

A little more than a decade ago, Louisiana was on the short list to land a new Toyota auto plant that eventually went to Tupelo, Mississippi.

But today Louisiana has been shut out of the competition to land America's next auto plant, a $1.6 billion joint venture from Toyota and Mazda that will create 4,000 jobs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Landmass > Bayou State...at least when it comes to automobile manufacturing.

Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas were considered.

Mississippi politicians were willing to do the deal for fewer kickbacks.

We miss out because we have a governor not interested in bringing them here plus a lot of people would throw a fit if the State have them tax credits.

Not missing by much but JBE does not want to put up match money to improve rail or road access to a prospective plant location.

The tax environment in Louisiana is terrible. Why invest? TX and MS a lot better.

no delorean isdera, no care.

quote:

I looked up some old articles out of AUTOMOTIVE NEWS from mid-1987. John DeLorean was involved with a company called The Louisiana Motor Company Inc. Initially he was said to be a consultant involved in nogotiating with Govenor Edwin Edwards and officials from the city of Monroe about building an assembly plant there. By late June of '87 the German publication DIE WELT was saying that John was planning a venture in West Germany to produce the Isdera in Louisiana. None of it ever amounted to anything but the one Isdera built was pretty nice to look at. It was to sell for about $140,000 with an annual production of 75 to 100 cars.

With Governor A$$hole Honor Code suggesting nothing but higher taxes, Louisiana will no longer be considered for any manufacturing plants.

Our tax code and structure, our fiscal inability and temporary taxes, our use of one time money to limit a deficit-all of which business believes will come back to them eventually to solve the states tax problems.

Our lack of infrastructure, willingness to provide infrastructure, unqualified workforce are factors.

It is to an automakers benefit to pick a state with no auto plant in order to get essentially 2 senators and several congressman on their side - to add to the politicians they already have (Southern states already with plants) but the benefit of that doesn't outweigh the risks of coming to LA considering there are other southern states with no plants and more favorable business climate.
