The newer crowd is in Tigerland
Tigerland needs to be bulldozed. It's embarrassing that Baton Rouge doesn't have a better bar scene for college students.
In just about any other city, the area right outside of campus would be a gold mine for owners of bars and/or restaurants. The Chimes Street area could be very cool if not for the fact that right outside of campus is culcha central.

Even Reggie's has somewhat decent employees
Bartending reggie's is a cult. The people that due seem to love it. I knew a guy (dated a chick i know) that worked there will after he graduated and into law school. By all accounts, he was a pretty straight laced guy and seemed to do alright in school, surely could have found a better job.

glad to see that not much has changed since i left a few years ago.

I have always wondered how Bogie's was able to create its atmosphere, reputation, and profitability while the others (save Fred's) can't come close.
Like you said, they're all basically four walls with similar specials. Maybe the patio was the difference maker.

My guess is that it's just a crapshoot. Group of people decides X place is the place to be, and so it is.
Only way I'd ever open a bar in BR is if I had an assload of money to put into it. No way in hell I'd open a generic bar with no identity. BR just doesn't support new businesses consistently enough for that.
It is the first thing I thought about when reading that article about no desirable spots for quick service chains in BR even though they all want to come here. We have plenty of empty buildings and available real estate. The problem is we have 20+ spots in town that seem to be "doomed" no matter what goes into them. I can't figure out what it is that makes some spots successful and some not.
You have Rum House and OoT killing it, but the place where Lassaigne's was next door can't keep a place open. Crazy. Once again, turn that into a trendier spot with tons of money dumped into it, it'll do great. But how many super-rich folks with trendy bar/restaurant idea are really hanging around BR?

I KNow what you are saying but wanted to point out that Fred's kills it. The bar and patio are even slammed every Sunday during the summer

Same. I remember reading that the one on Siegen was becoming something shitty, but now I don't remember what.

a college bar will fail every time if it can't attract females to it

And I love barcadia, but whose bright idea was it to eliminate the only form of parking over there? It doesn't effect me bc I just Uber, but they made this big arse beer garden out of the parking lot and don't do a damn thing with it, so I don't see who could've thought that was a good idea

Dude is a legend. He was the MVP of the 1L class last year. Dude boils a mean pot of crawfish.

people deemed it "cool" a long, long time ago
the shitty well drinks and bud lights they dish out aren't different from any of the other tigerland shitholes

I would guess rent is high and parking is particularly scarce.
Restaurants seem to do well

Parking issues?
I actually think the area is walk-able enough to justify a public parking deck in the area - maybe on top of the catch basin behind the fire station on Aster/Highland or where the old McDonald's used to be.
If the city could build one with a few hundred spaces within walking distance of Chimes/Highland/W. State, they could earn a lot of revenue charging people to park.
