A bar needs to open up that appeals to and markets to the greeks
No idea why you've been downvoted so much. The key to a successful LSU bar is to appeal to Greeks. They're the wealthiest and come in herds, which means $$$. Attract sorority girls and their fraternity following with come too.
Bogies and Fred's do so well because they attract Greeks and graduate students. Reggies, Mikes, The House, JL's all suck because they get their business from underage kids who can't get anything at the Fred's/Bogie's, weirdo non-Greeks, and culcha. I'm sure they're doing fine, but a truly successful bar has to market towards the wealthiest and most socially adept portion of campus.
Barcadia started marketing directly to Greeks and went from unheard of to killing it.
Hell, even the LSU Golf Course has done very well by marketing directly to Greeks.

But in 1996, we would play free pool from 3-6 and drink cheap pitchers as 18yo. In 1997, after ben wynn died, I couldnt drink a drop there.
free pool was a staple of my college years. $3 abita turbodog pitchers and free pool, yes please.
good selections on the record player too.
Didnt the owner burn it down?

They only enforce dress codes when they want to keep a shady character or bad element out of their establishment. You either looked like someone about to go in there throwing bows or the door guy just felt like being a dick (which is completely plausible).

That's pretty impressive
It involved a second bottle of bourbon and a small fire
In my defense, I only lit my own cigarette.

I'm very much white. Just was a regular GDI with the frat starter kit: khakis with nike's. Had a plain collard shirt without graphics and shite on it. They told it was because of no logo. Yeah I'm still salty.

Good question. Is Highland Coffee still in operation?

Them allowing smoking is why I never went... they looked to have some pretty great drink specials and even some solid beers on tap. However, not worth it to come home smelling like cigarettes.
Yep. I'm a former smoker and even then I could hardly stand to be in places that allowed smoking.
Sorry if already mentioned, but is there parking available in the Pleasant Hall lot after working hours? I remember going to the Varsity one night and parking there. But even if it is I guess it fills up pretty quickly.

Personally, I think we have enough bars. I don't say that because I wouldn't like more variety; I say it because rarely is a bar at full capacity in BR. With rent prices around town, very few new bars could draw the crowds needed to keep it alive.
Baton Rouge could use something like West Alabama Ice House. Then you are relying on past-grad crowd to keep you afloat
The problem is that college-age day-drinking crowd is going to be at the pool all summer instead of a bar.

Yes, behind and in front is open after hours, that's almost always where I park when going to Chimes/Varsity.

You just ran into a piece of shite doorman, then. The House, Mike's, and JL's employ the worst of the worst, which is why I haven't stepped foot in there since my first semester.
Even Reggie's has somewhat decent employees. Somehow those three listed above just hire anyone who loves Xanax.

Honestly, I'm as plain as a white dude can look. Not some super skinny bitch and not some roided out, spiked-hair tool. The no polo logo did it for me
ETA: they had a reason not to let me in after they told me it was because I didn't have a polo logo.

And the last bar on W. Chimes, Mahoney's, had bartenders that wanted nothing to do with customers they didn't personally know. Very shitty service for what could've been an awesome spot.

Yeah, but you can't oversaturate the market. Four walls and a bar and some "Greek specials" aren't going to appeal to people. They have their bars already. They don't need a new one. That is why Mahoney's and the 5 places Shady's has turned into have all failed.
You also have to look into what goes into attracting people. A bar like Bulldog or Merchant kills it. Why? Because they put hundreds of thousands of dollars into creating an appealing atmosphere. I mean, look at Bulldog. That was not done cheaply. But they knew they'd get crowds because the name + the atmosphere, and it paid off for them. You can't say the same for a college bar. Even if they have money, most college students aren't 21 until junior year. Pouring the money into a bar that would actually attract people probably doesn't seem worth doing on W Chimes.
Bogie's kills it because of who they appeal to. Fred's kills it because for whatever reason, they not only appeal to college students but they have people up to 30 years old packing the place out. Service industry people love them some Fred's.

This must be new because, last I heard, Barcadia is not killing it.
