Why are so many police officers / deputies allowed to be overweight?

Seems like that is a job that would require you to be fit, yet so many local LEO looks like they can barely button their pants.

How big you think their labor pool is? Large enough to enforce health requirements?

I know to get into State Police academy, you have to pass physical fitness test and I would guess most police depts. have that requirement at least.
After that, experience far outweights any weight gains you might make.

The requirements are generally REALLY easy to pass.

but to answer your question:
It all depends on the local precinct's rules
Many of the larger municipalities' departments have an annual conditioning test that officers must pass if they're going to be on patrol or working in a situation that might require them to chase a suspect

There is a big drop off in physical standards from State Police to local PD's. And a bigger drop off from guys right out of the academy to guys that have been LEO's for a while.

A lot of places give bonuses for performance on the physical fitness test. Chicago doesn't even have a mandatory fitness test but cops can get a yearly bonus for passing it. Granted it's only $350, but fewer than 1/4 of their force takes the test each year.
