this is what it boils down to. They are already having to resort to hiring what amounts to thugs and still are usually hiring at any given time. Make the requirement of 15% body fat or less and there would be a serious shortage of cops going to the hood at 3am to deal with the same domestic disturbance for the 7th time this year.

Most of the time a cop doesn't really need to be in shape. They either know where the bad guy lives already or said bad guy isn't in any better shape than the cops.

Well for one....Civil Service does not allow you to fire someone due to their weight.
Also, the shifts and work can make it hard to get on a normal meal schedule along with fast food just being an easy alternative while on shift.
Add in that our society for the most part is overweight.

Lots of the younger guys you see aren't fat. They are roided out meatheads that most likely have tribal tats. Just living the dream. Looking for heads to bust and pit bulls to shoot.

I can’t speak for the south. Typically the south doesn’t have high standards for many different fields.
One of the previous posters stated Chicago gives bonus’s for passing a PT test. Many departments will give bonus or something similiar for passing a simple PT test. I would be a big fan of making everyone participate and if they fail raise there health insurance. My cousin who is a nurse in Florida, she gets randomly tested for tobacco and she fails her rates go up.

This. It's actually pretty difficult to get on as a DPS Officer in Texas so there are not going to be a load of fat arses getting through the selection process.
