re: Why are people allowed to not carry/cancel insurance? And why do police not confirm this?

You should actually just be able to carry out a roadside execution and save the rest of us the inconvenience.

From what I understand this is common practice that once people pay for insurance they cancel it and keep the insurance cards as proof of insurance
It’s a damn shame

Yes, but that obviously wasn't my comment.
I understand the situation you are in and how a loophole allows a guy to obtain cards, cancel insurance and continue to drive.
My answer was to your question of...

Focusing on the "cancel" part, I'm telling you why they are allowed to cancel insurance. If you sell your car, you are allowed to cancel your insurance.
If you want a guy to obtain insurance and make sure he keeps it then you pigeonhole a ton of people who sell cars on days their insurance doesn't come due. That's why it's allowed.

I thought LEO'S could verify that real-time, now?
Maybe not to the day, but within a week?

I was riding with my buddy when he was t-boned by another driver (at fault). Started getting together his paperwork before BRPD arrived and realized his insurance had expired three days earlier. Quickly called his insurance company that told him he could not reactive his policy for another couple of days. Handed BRPD the expired insurance card hoping they did not notice. Of course they didn't. Handed it back over and wrote up report putting all the blame and damages on the other driver. Cop didn't put in the effort to check on his computer or read the actual card.

That's BS and haven't seen many of those
I was in an accident with an uninsured and they took his plate. Wouldn't let him drive his truck.

My nephew is a police officer. He says they can some places but Kentuckys databases are woefully old and do not update quickly enough.

I’d have a policy on the new car

Not sure how they do it in LA, but in Texas the insurance information comes up on the screen as soon as you run the plate.

For example, if you get in a crash in Louisiana, you'd better hope someone other than BRPD or NOPD show up.
Yeah you should hope you get the lazy arse State Trooper that tried to talk me out reporting the wreck when the at fault driver didn't have insurance. Told him to write the report!

If the St Gabriel police department can do it I'm sure every department in the state can.
