I am in many different grocery stores every day and even though stores are announcing they are limiting the amount of customers I haven't actually seen a store do it yet.

Every store in my area is keeping a count of people entering and exiting, and will hold people out until others leave. Walmart, Randall's, academy, Costco, HEB, etc. Everyone is doing it.

Because after the initial rush, people just aren’t going to them as often and the stores need fewer workers.

Home Depot, Trader Joe's, and my local grocery stores have all been doing it for at least three weeks around here (St Louis). Those are the only stores I've gone to, so I can't speak to any others.

That isn't remotely true. Grocery stores are hiring for nearly every position.

It isn't as high as the initial rush, but it's still higher than what it was before. Like it was a 3, the rush bumped it to a 10, and now it's at a 5.

Trader Joe's

I got dragged to Trader Joe's last week and we had wait in line for a solid 20 minutes to get in. They couldn't have been letting in more than 30 or 40 at a time. Not doing that again

Grocery stores have been under the gun. They started closing early so as to restock and clean up and giving the people who work there a break. At the start of this people were assaulting the grocery stores and replenishing syock was problematic

No poops at school or the office

Also it's mostly logistics related, not an actual lack of toilet paper

I wonder if shorter hours will become a new thing.

Situations like this cause us to re-evaluate things.

About a year or so ago, the Walmart by us went from 24 hours to a 6 am - 10 pm schedule. The store manager was at a chamber event I was at, and he was asked about why they made the change. I thought his answer was interesting.

He said the original idea behind 24 hours / super late hours was the stockers were in the store at those hours, so the lights and a/c, etc, had to be on anyways, so why not pay 1 or 2 cashiers to work. Even if they didn't have that many customers overnight, still would pay for itself.

Over time, a few things happened to change the model.

1) Theft increased, apparently the amount of shoplifting overnight was getting pretty high
2) They started hiring fewer cashiers and using more of self-checkout, however, that leads to more of #1.
3) Stocking patterns changed to where they didn't need to re-stock all night. Now, they can turn off most of the lights for a few hours.

So eventually it made no sense for them to stay open overnight.

If a store can shave off 3 hours a day of labor costs, and not impact sales, you might see more of this.
