Why are grocery stores shortening hours?

That just packs in more people at a time, making it easier to spread this shite.
Some of them have said “so they can disenfect the store,” but all the research points to person-to-person transmission as much more of a threat than surfaces.
If anything big chain stores should be getting as close to 24/7 as possible in order to keep as few people in the store at one time.

I know in my area they shortened hours to allowed the people ample time to restock uninterrupted by customers
Now that the panic buying has subsided it doesn't make as much sense

Grocery stores around me have normal volumes now
Home depot and lowes remain busy AF because the only thing you can do is work in yard.

Which would be much easier if you could go at 2AM

more time to stock shelves at night

Bugger off. Grocery stores should close at 8 even during normal times. Staying open until 10 is ridiculous.

At maybe half capacity, which is still hundreds of people.

To give them time to stock the shelves since everyone is still panic shopping like a mofo.

By me the Winn Dixie closes at 8pm to allow for restocking and opens 7-9am for high risk. It’s never been overly crowded at all.

Gives them more time to clean as well

Grocery store my brother works at started shortening hours when they had a few employees test positive and couldn't work for two weeks. Ensures they have the help they during the day and limit overnight to a few stockers.
Also, big push by stores to make sure shelves were full every morning. When they first got bombarded, every Karen was grabbing 5 packages of tp and 15 frozen pizzas because shelves were looking empty throughout the day

A lot of stores are only open 8-8. Depending on your job/commute, lots of people may not be able to get shopping done during the week.

Just shows they were never doing it before. Which is pretty disgusting considering it sells food.

My local Publix stocks during the day, and did before COVID. It's irritating as hell, especially when they've got half the aisle blocked and you're trying to maintain your distance from other shoppers.

Clean, disinfect, restock, and train employees on ever changing policies.
They also want to have their full staff of managers and supervisors in the store as much as possible. Very few things are operating as normal in the grocery industry, and they want their most experienced and capable employees on site as much as possible. That’s almost impossible if the store is open to customers 18 hours a day.
Many are having problems with staffing. The high unemployment rates have created a huge pool of potential employees, but not many people want to be exposed to hundreds of people a day. Some simply don’t have enough employees.

Uh no because they're limiting capacity.

It's to limit exposure to staff and others, allow them to restock while the store is without customers everywhere, clean, etc.
