Some new cars the headlights are over $5k.

Ugh..
And I thought I had it bad changing out my Tahoe headlight yesterday.
Halogen bulb was only about 13 dollars, but you have to take off the whole front end to get to it.
I'll be getting some LEDs to put in next time.

Yeah, but inflation is going down like a stone.

Buy an older used car that you can work on.

Try eBay or even a local wrecking yard (Pull Apart or others). But eBay usually has a used part or new for much much less than a dealer. If you're handy with a few hand tools you can save some money. Just my two cents.
Pull a Part has inventories on line. Go find your car in their lot and practice taking it apart there, even if you don't buy the part.

this is why i drive a 1999 pickup. yeah, it has little problems here and there because it's old, but i can do all these little routine maintenance issues for less than a hundred dollars and a couple hours on a saturday in most cases.
you can thank government mandates by unelected bureaucrats for all of these expensive changes

Coincidence that taillights were out on my 16 Yukon and 89 ford fricking ranger at the same time. Yukon 275 for the cheap one on Amazon. Ranger 9 dollars.

Got a 2000 F150, 81k miles on it. Never been my primary vehicle but don't plan on ever selling it because there is nothing on it that can't be easily fixed. I can get an entire reman shortblock for under $3000 still, that's like two tail lights on a new truck...

Yep not like the old days with no components to assemble. Parts are manufactured as complete plug-in or bolt-in modules either here or overseas (China) to expedite assembly. The problems are difficult to access parts, nothing can be replaced internally and crappy design, cheap highly degradable plastics result in leaks, cracks and component failure.

Tail light goes out on a car with a regular bulb....most likely a $5 bulb replacement
LED tail light goes out on a car...doesn't matter what the issue is, whole assembly has to be swapped...$450
Damn
Just curious, what type of car/truck is this?
One of our cars is a 2015 Ford Fusion. Had a headlight go out and ended up having to pull off the entire front clip and remove the entire light assembly just to get to it. Whoever engineered that thing did it so that the dealership could charge three hours of labor for a headlight.

Don’t throw the old one away. Is there any way to access the circuit board, assuming there’s a circuit board.

Some new cars the headlight Profit margin is over $4900
Fixed it for you. Everyone wants to act like things cost so much more now, and some things do. But lots of it is profit margin/ labor margins. There's not a car around that the factory is paying $4500 for the lights. You think about that it would be a $250000 car to buy parted out.

I remember when you could change a bulb in 5 minutes with just a screwdriver. Now it’s a multi step process.
Can change the tail light assembly in 5 minutes

What type of vehicle is that?

My buddy's Audi was $1k parts and labor to change the two head light bulbs.
Listen, all cars are getting more expensive.
But if you really want to FAFO, buy a german/austrian/nazi car. Even a VW.
Never again.

They could have made it so you could swap the led bulb.

There's no way to get into it. It's basically a sealed plastic case with a plug on the back.
They didnt have to make it that way. I could have been designed to have the bulb replaced.
But that woulnt make the stealership a wheelbarrow full of money.
We should get the environmentalist to go after them, since the old headlight is plastic and will live in a landfill for 100,000 years.
They made water bottle manufacturers use a glorified plastic bag instead of a bottle you can hold without crushing.

You know not what you speak.
Here is an Autozone knock off assembly for $5k.

Assuming this is true, how long until thieves realize this brand new business opportunity?
