Has it ever really been proven that Carl Weiss fired the fatal shot? Was it Huey’s bodyguards? From what you’ve heard and read, what do you think the truth is? Was there a cover-up?

To quote the Stones:

I shouted out
Who killed the Kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me

I found out that a very good friend of mine's mom was the daughter of one of HPL's political arch enemies who was considered a prime suspect in the "plot" to assassinate HPL

Glenn Watts from Central was the limo driver who brought him to the hospital. There's even a road named after him off Hooper Road. I used to hang out with him and drink chocolate Yoo-hoo's while my sister was taking piano lessons from his wife. That old man had some stories.

I tend to believe it was accidental from a body guard

I was at the Capitol a couple of months back for a meeting and got a private tour from the Governor's aide. When we walked past the spot, he stated that it is pretty much accepted these days that the bodyguards hit HPL with a ricochet while shooting wildly at the doctor.

Whoever did it should’ve done it years prior and saved the state, possibly.

There was an old story in my family that my grandfather was at a meeting where everybody pulled straws to see who would do it. Weiss got the short straw, I guess, though it was not revealed to the group at the time.

I told this to my La. history professor at LSU after class one day and he said he had heard that story before. FWIW.

I think the guards rarely, if ever, went to the pistol range.

So, probably them.

Weiss obviously had Jewish ancestry, but he was Catholic. He was valedictorian of Catholic-BR (although, I think it was before it was named that).

He drew the short straw at Judge Pavy's house in Opelousas.

I am convinced that he was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss.

I have read a number of books on Huey including the great biography by T. Harry Williams. The most credible evidence and testimony convinces me that it was Weiss.

I just finished reading Killing the Kingfish by Jack McGuire. This author did a lot of research. He covers all the theories from Weiss punching Huey to the bodyguards shooting him to the exact timeline of the shooting. It is a book that is worth the price.

When Huey was shot, he turned and ran the other way from where Weiss was eventually shot. There were many eyewitness accounts as to his running BEFORE the bodyguards started shooting so it could not have been the bodyguards.

I used to read everything I could about Huey Long before the internet. Was really looking forward to the movie with Sean Penn, until I watched it. Or watched the first half of it and turned it off. It was terrible.

It is almost certain that when Weiss punched the senator for allegedly using a slur about his family, Long’s bodyguards overreacted, firing their guns needlessly and indiscriminately into the skirmish. Long was simply caught in the crossfire.

Of course, the truth was not politically expedient for Long’s allies, who indubitably feared public backlash to the bodyguards’ negligence. So, as he underwent surgery, they began their cover-up. They moved Weiss’s car. They tampered with and hid evidence. They removed Weiss’s gun from his glove compartment and planted it on the scene. And they launched their smear campaign against Weiss, portraying him as a bloodthirsty assassin determined to stop the good works of Huey P. Long who was thwarting the best efforts of the bad guys to keep the little guy down.
