Different. That one is in Port Gipson. Rodney is 15 or so miles SW of there, in the middle of nowhere.

Fun fact, Rodney almost beat out Jackson for the capital of Mississippi back in the day. Then one day the river shifted 6-7 miles and left it high and dry. Now there is nothing there but hunting camps and an old dilapidated church with a cannon ball stuck in it.

Eta- I now see my fun fact was already posted

That’s cool history, had no clue about it. Will stop by next time I drive through there.

Old country store fried chicken is one of the most overrated things I’ve ever had. Not to mention the meal is $18

Also the cannon ball in the church isn’t the original one. The original fell out eventually and was lost but a restoration project in 1990 they cemented one in place of the old one

I disagree on the fried chicken. It's great imo. However the sides suck and it is definitely over priced. And ole dude needs to learn some new songs. Grandmama was a cornbread cooking queeeeeeen gets mighty old after a while.

It may have been hit with a cannon ball, but it dodged the bullet of becoming the hell hole Jackson is today.

So how would one effect less loess loss?

Keep the area wooded. You can see the wooded areas have steep (for Mississippi) slopes down to the drainages, but the cleared pasture is much steeper. That area looks like it's up on a bluff with lots of fall down to the creek to the east. The woods just hold better than pasture.

Edit: the geography of this area is really cool. You can exactly where the natural floodplain of the Mississippi ends as the bluffs pop up about 100' in elevation above the flat plain.

Rodney? I hunted near Lake Rodney and it was a mf'er to get down there on Ashland Rd or maybe it was Ashland Plantation Rd. In all that time didn't realize there was an old town named Rodney. Assuming it's down in the bottom and not up in the hills? Definitely an interesting area.

Reminds me of Belle Grove in White Castle. (1857)

1939 or so, abandoned.

1908 photo

A shame that not even ruins remain of one of the largest Plantation homes ever built in the South. Just a plaque off of levee road.

She dwarfed Nottaway, her neighbor.

It, too survived the war, only to be lost totally several decades later.

moar pics and info

I went about 22 years ago and then took the Trace up to Memphis on a road trip. Be interesting to visit again after all these years.

My daughter drew the Windsor Ruins in Charcoal.

Sold in a day. Something about those columns standing

alone. Creepy and mesmerizing.

Check out Rocky Springs as well if you decide to make a day trip.
