Not a porta potty but a little shed behind the house over a hole in the ground.

They are fairly common when hiking.

Guilty as charged.
No big deal in rural Appalachia in the '60s & '70s.

wasn't too uncommon for folks who lived in the cone tree to have one when I was a kid

Did it in negative 20 plus degree weather snowmobiling in very north NH. Heard my piss start to freeze during the 20 foot or so drop, literally sounded a bit like glass at the end.

I used them at duck and alligator hunting camps that are totally off the grid.

In basic training the ranges had very large outhouses with giant piles of shite under those plywood benches

Yep. My great grandma had one

I've pooped in a bucket on a boat a few times.
There's a carwash/truckwash in Port Allen on 415 near the interstate and I've been told the employees there use an outhouse.

I'm an avid hiker/backpacker so "yes". Nothing like an aged wood toilet seat.

As a small kid, I remember my grandparents outhouse. Also had to pump water from outside to bathe. Coal oil lamps for lighting. Fireplace for heat.
They lived on an 80 acre cotton farm. Raised hogs and chickens for food. Had a couple of milk cows, and a mule to pull the plow.

When we bought this farm, it had indoor plumbing. But left over from the 1950's were two two holers, one by a house abandoned in a patch of woods.
There was also evidence of another: back where there used to be slave cabins, one of eight fruit trees we planted out grew the other seven, even though they were all apples on the same rootstock. We figured it had hit something in the soil , and that it may have had its roots find something (we didn't notice any differences when we planted it.)

Still use one at deer camp. When it’s cold as crap outside, you don’t have to worry about any coffee to wake you up, that jolt you get when works wonders

I have. My grandparents church had one and I had to use it anytime I went to church with them. So, probably once a month.
They didn't get indoor plumbing at the church until 1995 when I attended to get a bible for graduating High School.

When I was young, out houses were not uncommon. I had friends who lived with no running water or any type of plumbing and even some without electricity. We had a camp on the river without either.

Just did this past fall at hunting camp in Wyoming.

There was one on an old family homestead. Wasn't too much different than a wooden port-a-potty.
Much like a latrine when camping. I've definitely shite in worse places.
My pants come to mind.
