When I was young I fought all the time. Most amounted to simple wrestling matches, because no one really knew MMA back then. I’m sure I was in at least six dozen (I used to be on staff at beer hall bandstand that served rednecks), and I doubt I was truly punched more than a dozen times. Nor did I land too many.

I’ll add this advice: The key to winning fights is to fight drunks.

Fought my brother every day till he got back from SEALs and stomped me out four times the same night because I wouldn't take the L. We were both into martial arts and tended to practice on each other full blast as a form of conversation.

Lots of street fights as a kid. Never lost one but got close a few times. I was very lucky in that regard.

Over 700 documented restraints on some of the most dangerous mental patients in the state of Louisiana at a group home I worked at for five years. Was getting attacked pretty much daily at least once. Usually a lot more than once a day till they figured out they weren't winning any. Then they'd send me and my partner into the other houses when they had riots to get them back under control. The two of us could walk into a house full of crips and bloods and not have to touch a hair on anybody's head because they all knew if they tried it, they'd be embarrassed in front of the rest of the house.

The most serious fights I was ever in involved knives. One time we had a patient get into a medicine cabinet where the kitchen knives were kept and got his hands on a big butcher knife. He was schizophrenic, off his meds, and I was some kind of monster / demon or something so he needed to kill me. He didn't. And I didn't file charges. There were street fights that got super hinkey when knives came out but generally non crazy people back off when cut the first time. Like I said, I got lucky as hell more than a few times or I wouldn't be here.

This is another drunken vagrant who came after me while I was taking train pictures in Shreveport, The location is just South of I 20 (the building has since collapsed due to rain accumulations on the roof) in Shreveport. The main line is busy. This drunk starts yelling at me from the building side. "I'm kickin' yo' arse m.f.". He's hammered. He comes across the tracks, stumbling and bumbling all the way. He falls down between the rails on the closest track. He's bleeding. I check the nearby signals - they show no train coming. Call EMS and they arrive with the cops. Cop tells me this is "not the first time" this drunk has fallen down drunk on the tracks.

I think that was a takeoff of Rocky 5, but if that is you Melvin, I remember when you came over to train in Houston at the Power Ranger's place when I was first started doing BJJ. Damn, it must be 15 years ago. We had some pretty intense training sessions when you were here and I say the wrestling stuff you showed me I still use to this day. It would be cool if it really was you. Seriously would love to chat.

As for fistfights, frick yes. I grew up boxing into college and literally thought I could take anybody in Monroe and thanks to a place called Sal's, I tried.

Funniest I ever saw was an all out slugfest at Rendon Inn. Not sure which fraternity, but they pissed off the whole bar. They got destroyed and then the local youth came and robbed them while they were licking their wounds. This was 94 or 95.

Being in a really street fight is a strong predictor of trashiness (especially if it’s happened more than once)

I tried to deescalate a pretty big brawl (like 4 v 9) by yanking dudes off a guy on the floor they were stomping. I turned around and got absolutely fricking walloped in my eye; I've still got a little bit of bone floating around right below my eyelid.

Luckily, one of my friends is a very large, very scary man who was waiting for an excuse to scrap. The offense on my delicate honor caused this ginger gorilla to go apeshit. He picked the kid up by his drawers and yelled, "nobody touches Hemp!" and threw him in to the back of a pickup truck like he was tossing a puppy. Similar scenes played out across the back deck.

This was about 150 feet from where the sheriff on duty parks at night.

I’ve been in a few

Got Thrown through a large storefront window by 2 guys

Parking lot at Night town in Destin and guy pulled a knife which I turned on him.

Had at least 2 street Fights that required the police to break up

Even got into the middle of a large brew haha at the dome after a guy threw his entire dome foam on me and my girls friend as he tried to throw on someone else.

Yeah, I’m kinda trashy. At least I was.

We had this neighborhood bully who used to go around stealing people's bikes pretty much taking whatever he wanted from people. Big cross eyed dude.

This girl I liked, her dope fiend sister would hook up him and he treated her like shite.

One night after a drug dealer tried to have me and my friend killed this dude came around and he got into the girl's face that I liked and told him that all the dudes around the neighborhood might be scared of him, but she wasn't and that pissed him off. He grabbed her and it was like I went blank. I pulled a gun on this dude. By that time my parents were out there and my dad told me to put the gun down and fight him like a man.. Because no matter what happens you live to fight another day.

This dude was a good 6" taller than me, just a big dude who could knock people out in a punch. I hit him and it did very little. We got on the ground and scrapped a little but, but he wasn't going to stop until he beat me senseless. I got a brick and knocked that son of a bitch in the head with it. Pretty much knocked him out, I got a few licks in after and then threw a trash can at him. Finally, someone had beat his arse. The cops came and he ended up getting arrested because he stole so much shite from people the cops finally caught him.. My boy, who smoked weed all the time went to rehab and later I ended up having to go live with my uncle and cousin.

My uncle won the lottery and lived in a better neighborhood and I went there to get away from everything. It turns out, you can get into street problems in the suburbs.

Few wild fights with other guys and bouncers in dog house, itz, chapel hill and some strip clubs in nc that had me and buddies going to hospital 4-5x to get knife wounds and stitches sewn up, twice to get front tooth capped again then some wild times in Columbus, ATL and Seattle wa, most recent wild night was red garter and ricks on duval street in 2019 them bouncers didn’t no what they were getting into hahahaha

Getting old now I don’t do that shite no more

I’ve spoken with several people involved in teaching police academies and hiring/recruiting police.
It’s alarming how many young adults apply for that job who have never taken a punch. The “zero tolerance” to fighting in schools, playgrounds, and sports have limited experiences. Most people only know about being punched in the face from what they’ve seen in YouTube knockout videos.

Yes. Unfortunately too many to count. Worst one was against a much older man who had it out for me for years. The fight spilled into the street. Thankfully the cops broke it up but not before I was in cuffs along with my opponent. When we were being booked the lady at the station said it was the 2nd father and son booking she has done in 46 years on the force
