re: Who else here can’t stand going out to dinner anymore?

Also Mexican, just because I like the vibes and I like margaritas that I can’t make at home
I've also found that Mexican takeout is way more reasonably priced than other cuisines. I can have a very filling Mexican meal (without margs) for around, and a lot of times under, 15 bucks.
Usually almost anything takeout is approaching 20 bucks nowadays.

I like to get hibachi takeout cuz you can get the child’s portion and it’s still a ton of food.

Absolutely great OP. It's so bad now.
It costs twice as much and the hostesses and waitresses are half as cute and the servers (male and female) are half as fun and half as thoughtful as they used to be.
Total losing combination.

I would rather prepare my own food at home these days.
Same here but we will usually go to a taco or Mexican restaurant once a week. We started a thing unplanned where drinks are minimal if at all now, we don't order anything we can cook better at home, which is a lot, and then after eating our home cooked meals we price it for what the meal would cost if ordered at a restaurant.
Pricing our own meals puts it all into perspective and when we are feeling lazy that price/quality comes into mind and next thing we know we are eating another home cooked meal we quickly pulled together.

Yeah I just hate having to sit and wait especially if the place is noisy. Service is always bad now and food is not good most places.

the noise is what gets us. every place going bare hard floors , no ceiling. open spaces with bar. can't hear without talking very loudly. my wife already hard of hearing doesn't help/

I buy a weeks worth of groceries for my family for less than half of your 300 dollar dinner bill

I like going out to dinner but I’m not spending anywhere near that kind of money. I wouldn’t want to pay $300 a meal either.
If my bill is $300, dessert better have been two $100 bills and a scoop of ice cream.

I don't necessarily mind noise, but I will absolutely avoid restaurants that have loud, off brand music playing. If it fits the general aesthetic, I would prefer it not be super loud, but fine. But blast some bullshite that completely clashes with the ambiance because the manager is trying to frick the kinda cute alternative bartender and this is the music she likes? frick off

Go out to eat once-twice a month and its usually mexican or sushi
Never understood the folks that spend $250 on a dinner regularly outside of an Anniversary or birthday

I can't get behind takeout more than once in a blue moon. I love to cook, so if it's not going out for cocktails/dinner/social change of scenery from home.. then I'd rather just eat my own cooking. Worst case is something prepared from the freezer/store for ultra lazy days.
Something about food that is supposed to be presented in a certain way in person being eaten from sitting in styrofoam boxes just doesn't appeal to me.
I am 100% this way. Ultra lazy days here are a sandwich/breakfast for dinner/something from the freezer. Unless I am sick then I want takeout pho or miso soup.

Unfortunately the first 2 1/2 years maybe three after my stroke I was living on Dardash and frozen food
it sucked
it sucked

Agreed, the amount it cost to go out to a run of the mill restaurant has grown to the point I can’t justify it anymore.
I’m no chef but if I’m spending over $100-200 for 2 people, I’d rather spend it on a decent cut of meat or fish (or other seafood) and do it myself.
Idk if it’s me getting older and more cynical but it’s just become an unjustifiable expense for me. That’s not even taking into account the times someone isn’t quite happy with their meal or we get a shite server.
I still go out, but it is significantly less than it was just a few years ago.

Golden Corral offers great value

I volunteered to pay for the family in Florida last year, six of us.
Bill was $564.00 + they added some 10% mystery fee for (obtaining products).
Then they expect the 20-25%

As a rule, I don't Dash from "nice" restaurants. But I will Dash the frick out of things in which presentation don't really matter. A little tray of maki? Yep. Ramen, pho? Yup yup. Bagel and lox with an extra bagel for tomorrow morning? You god damned right.

We have eaten in a restaurant maybe twice since covid. We still eat out, but get takeout and take it home. Avoid drink charges, idiots, and higher tips, so win/win/win.
WTF

We almost always get takeout because we don't feel like cooking that night.
