We have eaten in a restaurant maybe twice since covid. We still eat out, but get takeout and take it home. Avoid drink charges, idiots, and higher tips, so win/win/win.

Umami in BR.
It's the highest quality and most creative sushi in BR by a landslide, but it is an unassuming strip mall sushi place, so I don't expect (or want) sushi in courses.
That said, the nigiri came out before the rolls. We are just slow.

quote:I eat out 4 or 5 nights a week at local mom and pop (mostly Mexican and Asian) places and usually spend around $30 with a couple beers. I never order apps though. It's a pretty weird concept really, "I need to eat some food to get hungry.". That'll cut out 15-20 bucks by itself.
Hell, an appetizer, a couple cocktails and an entree even at local mom & pop restaurants is running close to $100 with the tip figured in now.

takeout
See, I can't get behind takeout more than once in a blue moon. I love to cook, so if it's not going out for cocktails/dinner/social change of scenery from home.. then I'd rather just eat my own cooking. Worst case is something prepared from the freezer/store for ultra lazy days.
Something about food that is supposed to be presented in a certain way in person being eaten from sitting in styrofoam boxes just doesn't appeal to me.

Is $200 -$250 that much different than $250-300.
$50 really isn’t when you are at that price point because it’s close to that if someone gets an extra cocktail or both want a dessert.
Is what it is but we are splitting hairs depending on the place and what we want to eat.
Point is it’s too much on a regular basis that’s for sure.

I like appetizers because they're almost always more interesting than entrees. I'm happy to get a couple fun apps and split 1 entree.
We seldom do dessert, and if we do, it's all him. Not a dessert kind of gal.

That top part is for the wife and I, not just for me, so about $50 each.

I'm also not typically trying to have an experience. I just want simple dinner and I prefer to go out for them because I spend my days in a kitchen cooking for other people and don't feel like going home to cook more.
When I do spend money, it's for something I can't do as well as a restaurant like sushi or Vietnamese.

I would rather prepare my own food at home these days.

I buy gift cards at grocery stores. Buy a $50 gift card (like at a Yardhouse, BJ's or a place like that) and you get $10 off your groceries. Buy that then you get like a 4 pound try tip for $6.

I also will sometimes do a (relatively cheap) app. I'm not getting the barbecue shrimp for Galetoires every night or something like that.
For me, a lot of it is a time thing. It takes time for cooking and cleanup that I just don't want to do, especially as a single person, if I'm only doing it for myself.
I'm tired at the end of the day too, sometimes I will have just finished working my side gig, and the convenience of running for two minutes into a nearby restaurant to pick up some decent food outweighs spending 1.5 hours cooking and cleaning.
Yeah, it's more expensive, but this is what I choose to spend my money on. I'm not going on shopping sprees or buying new cars every couple of years. I'd prefer to spend my disposable income on coffee, weed, and takeout. And that's what makes me happy.

You just have to claim that it's your birthday or an anniversary to get free dessert
I find a random hair in the free breadstix works as well

I go out to eat with my SO about 3-4 times a week. We are around $50-$100 per meal depending on appetizers. Alcohol at restaurants has gotten way out of hand in terms of pricing for drinks. I have enough bourbon at home to open my own store. I often see alcohol 15-20x marked up in restaurants.
I place all of our utility bills on one CC that gives back 5% on utilities and use those points for our anniversary dinner as a "splurge." We typically get 400-500 cash back yearly by paying our utilities. We struggle to spend $400 at any of the "nice" restaurants.

I can definitely make a better steak than Outback type places, but Ruth's is still better than mine.
Same but I can’t cook seafood worth a shite so that’s what we go out for when she is craving seafood.

I agree!

I'm like your wife. I love getting a little fixed up and going out to eat at a nice place. Nice place includes how it looks, the fancy drinks, just the whole experience. I also really don't enjoy cooking much and I hate having to clean the kitchen after. It's the whole experience. Now, I'm not dropping quite that much money all the time, but I do love going out to eat, and not just getting food. My grown kids pretty much only want to do take...good take out, but it's just not the same. I'd be going into town every weekend to a different place if I did what I want.

Sushi is generally what we go eat because it’s one of those things I need on a plate, not in a container.
Also Mexican, just because I like the vibes and I like margaritas that I can’t make at home
