Japanese
Both to citizens, humans, military, and POWs
Germans to the Jews

I had a family member survive this. In 5th grade I had to do a history report on anything I wanted in WWII.
I did it on the Bataan death March. Somewhere I have a recording of him talking to me about what he and others went thru on that March.

I know the question was about the civilian population, but I am adding this anyway. When I was a kid I went to church with a guy who was a POW in a Japanese camp. They skinned the backside of his body, from head to toe. You could see the backside of his head, which looked like Freddy Kruger's head. I can't imagine the pain of something like that, and wonder how he didn't die of infection.

The Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 taught the Japanese people some very hard lessons about foreign rule.

I’ve read about frictions between the Americans and English (some, not a ton) but I think that probably had more to do with fighting side by side than anything
im sure that played a big part. I guess the Germans just made a good impression. They noted that even in surrender they were marching in line, were always behaved and orderly. The citizens went right to work cleaning up the ruins of their towns and rebuilding instead of moping around waiting for help. At least some of our soldiers were thinking, "hey these people are just like us". Stuff like that made an impression after fighting across France where it was dog eat dog and then meeting up with the bloodthirsty Russians who were wanting to rape and pillage everything. Also the scenic towns and countryside in Germany/Austria was part of the charm.

Japs pushed nails through prisoner's testicles
Germans put little children into sacks and fed American POWs raw potatoes

Right down to even using slave labor from what they considered to be lower races of people and everything.

This paragraph alone proves how fricked up the Japanese truly were:
In China, the Japanese waged ruthless biological warfare against Chinese civilians and soldiers. Japanese aviators sprayed fleas carrying plague germs over metropolitan areas, creating bubonic plague epidemics. Japanese soldiers used flasks of disease-causing microbes, which included cholera, dysentery, typhoid, anthrax and paratyphoid, to contaminate rivers, wells, reservoirs and houses; mixed food with deadly bacteria to infect hungry Chinese civilians; and even passed out chocolate filled with anthrax bacteria to the local children.
Stuff like that served ZERO militarian purpose and was only intended to cause mass death and chaos for shits and giggles.
The Japanese did horrific things that didn't serve to advance their occupation or colonial expansion at all, they just wanted to watch their enemies' people suffer and die. The Nazis did this with the Jews and other "undesirables", but they often left the innocent people that occupied the land alone.
The Japanese simply went scorched earth and killed and burned everything they encountered, no matter who they were. The Nazis were fricked up and did their fair share of murdering, raping, pillaging, and looting, but they had instances where they left the locals alive or at least took them as prisoners.
And I say this as a Polish Jew whose family was 90% wiped out by the Nazis

Let it be noted there’s a murderer amongst us-
My grandkids great-grandfather was a Bataan March survivor.
A bad mofo in his day.
He recently died at age 99.
Drove an Avalon until he was 98.

Japanese and it's not close.
Nearly 50% of American POWs died in the hands of the Japanese.
Same for the North Koreans during the Korean War.
Vietnam? About 13%.
Germany? 1%.

The average German soldier was just a normal soldier that had nothing to do with the holocaust.
The average Japanese soldier was a sadistic motherfricker raised from birth to fight total war and his honor meant more than his life.
That's what I gathered from both of my grandfather's, one who served on the European front and the other who turned 17 on the island of Peleliu with the old breed.

Considering the US was 90% Northern European at the time...
*People of German descent made up a large part of the population. Especially in the Midwest.

Kind of surprising, a lot of WW2 vets particularly from the Pacific theater and I’d imagine definitely ones that were survivors of the death march would refuse to drive a Japanese vehicle.

Ha, yea I guess opinions vary on where or if to draw the line between the fanatical nazis and the average German fighting communism and round 2 of ww1. But that’s a whole other topic.

The Japanese and it isn’t close. My Dad was only 7 when the war ended but he heard enough stories from older friends and family members that served that he absolutely hates Japs. Anyone that doubts this needs to go read up on the Bataan death March.

Agreed. I have a relative who was a marine in the pacific and he refused to own anything japanese the rest of his life, from vehicles to electronics. Hated them with an intense passion. He saw some rough stuff as we know he was at iwo and a couple other tough fights while in combat.

The Japanese were fresh off hardcore bladed warrior culture with new first-world toys at their disposal. Like a bunch of 13 year olds with RPGs. Germany hadn't been there since the Germanic tribes. Germans are bunch of engineers with a nihilism complex.
So what do you think?
