Who do you consider to be more brutal in WW2, the Germans or the Japanese?

I guess the question is which do you consider to be more brutal in terms of how the treated civilian populations (either their own or territories they conquered) and not necessarily toward military combatants. Would you consider Nazi Germany of the Japanese Empire to be more cruel/brutal/barbaric?

To me the Germans seemed like they might have been more hate filled towards the Jews, Slavs etc but their methods of carrying out the genocide seemed to be more calculated, cold, and efficient whereas Japan just went frickin wild killing for essentially sport with the Chinese - for example the contest between these two Japanese soldiers and how their press covered it to see which would could kill 100 Chinese first using a sword. That just being one tiny blip of a seemingly endless stream of cruelty the soldiers would dish out.

And then both the Germans and the Japanese have gruesome medical experimentation that they conducted, either from people like Josef Mengele or Unit 731 and the stories of the things they did is absolutely horrific.

Equally brutal. The Germans tried to hide their worst brutality. The Japanese were outwardly bold with theirs. Both got what they deserved.

My grandfather who fought in the Pacific was a very quiet and sweet man. But god damn he absolutely hated the Japanese.

Look up John Rabe.

Rabe was a Nazi party official who told the Japanese were being way too brutal for their actions in China, including Nanking. In fact, there is a bust of him out in the open in Nanking

A literal Nazi thought the Japanese were too brutal.

People are all saying Japanese and that’s definitely a legit answer and probably my choice but let’s not discount the Germans who did a lot of evil things too. Even the rank and file which people so often want to ignore.

Guy Sajer talked about how there would be people who’d tie up prisoners and drop live grenades into the pockets of one of them.

The Russians. They had soldiers patrolling the rear of the front line. If you took a step back, you were executed. No retreating.

Japs and it’s not close. Germany overshadows Japan because they’re from Europe and who they committed atrocities against and who writes the history books. No one really cared about Japan because they’re from far away east Asia and killed Chinese people who we didn’t care about.

Agreed, it’s a great series. I still have the last episode to listen to but I’ve definitely learned a ton about the war in the Pacific I didn’t know about.

Aside from the war crimes and atrocities the Japanese committed during the South Pacific campaign, read upon the horror the Japanese brought upon the indigenous island populations that inhabited the South Pacific archipelagos during the 30’s and 40’s. They were beyond evil and brutally killed these innocent, island dwelling people by the thousands.

The Chinese haven’t forgotten what the Japs did to them during WWII. I think they’ll want revenge in the near future

Korea has a better relationship but they still hate Japan in the back of their mind too
