Japan has a top 5 economy and about 40 million more people.
And I feel Japan is a superpower as well. Maybe 6th behind Germany. I’d have to research the them a bit more if we want them to go head to head but Germany and Japan belong on the short list

I thought I was talking to OP. My bad. I agree Germany is high on the list, but 3 is too high imo.
It is ironic that both Japan and Germany are sitting pretty globally after what went down about 60 years ago.

The Yen is 3rd in global trade use so they have to be considered a superpower.

No other nation has ever achieved anything close to this.

I think the US and China wield the most influence.

Please clarify if you're referring to military superpowers or economic superpowers.
Those are two different categories and the rankings are different for each one
You’re thinking of military power and economic power. Superpower entails having a lot of both.

Agreed. I think it’s more remarkable how quickly Germany bounced back from Treaty of Versailles to even start WWII. There was only 20 year gap between end of WWI and Germany invasion of Poland...9/11 was almost 20 years ago to put in in perspective.

And let’s not forget about Spain, Portugal, France and the Dutch. Of course these were not in modern times but there was a time before the USA.
Who didn’t take world history???

True. Although there were certainly some really rough times under the Weimar Republic. The Germans are definitely an industrious bunch.

No they absolutely do not. Not even close. Germany’s leaders would shite their pants if the US pulled out all military support. There’s stories about their soldiers using broom sticks in training exercises because they didn’t have enough functioning rifles. Japan is mostly concerned about what happens in their part of the world from a military standpoint.
A lot of people in this thread don’t understand what being a superpower means. It’s not just having a large economy. You need to be able to enforce your power/influence in multiple areas and situations around the world simultaneously. You very much need a powerful and advanced military to do such a thing.

Russia is a military superpower simply because of the thousands of nuclear warheads it possesses, the most of any country in the world. And it has the capability of delivering those warheads anywhere in the world via its ICBMs.
But it is an economic lightweight having a GDP less than Brazil's or Italy's GDP. Plus, Russia's currency is way down the list of traded currencies in the world.

Someone had to be at the head of the table back in the era of hand to hand combat and early industrialization. You’re conflating colonial empires with our superpower status; a superpower has the ability to destroy the world. We were the first to have it, and the only to have it and also have a dominant economic system in front of it.
Russia had the bombs, but they couldn’t get the money or the cultural influence. The UK was an old hat by the point this term was coined.
