Portland Mercury Story

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever see printed. However I did learn a new phrase "culinary white supremacy".

quote:

Week after week people of color in Portland bear witness to the hijacking of their cultures, and an identifiable pattern of appropriation has been created. Several of the most successful businesses in this town have been birthed as a result of curious white people going to a foreign country, or an international venture, and poaching as many trade secrets, customs, recipes as possible, and then coming back to Portland to claim it as their own and score a tidy profit.

quote:

Because of Portland’s underlying racism, the people who rightly own these traditions and cultures that exist are already treated poorly. These appropriating businesses are erasing and exploiting their already marginalized identities for the purpose of profit and praise.

Someone even put together a hate list of white owned restaurants to go after.

quote:

Immediately after the fury continued online, a different resource emerged and quickly went viral: a Google doc showing exactly how prevalent this epidemic is. The list titled “White-Owned Appropriative Restaurants in Portland” provides a who’s who of culinary white supremacy.

quote:

Despite this issue being dismissed by supporters of Kook’s Burritos—while our views were seen as just a bunch of angry minorities attacking innocent white women who only wanted to make tacos—the food cart closed as of late Friday. Willamette Week has not taken any responsibility or shown any accountability for their actions.

Their action of writing a story about a food truck?

quote:

If you’re really dying to get a burrito, here’s a list of six Latin owned restaurants that also exist in Portland.

Whitey = bad; Everyone else = good

Since Texas was once part of Mexico, if anything that was created in that area before it became part of the US, once it became part of the US, the US incorporated the culture of that area right? So what if the burrito was very popular in the area and then all of a sudden it became part of the US, at that point you can argue it is now part of US culture therefore anyone who is American is able to open up a burrito shop.

It's called Tex-Mex food in Texas.

This is a serious question. Is how Italian is pizza? When you think about "classic American food" you think hamburgers, hotdogs... pizza... But it is also associated with being Italian.

The authenticity of the burrito doesn't even matter, it just adds another layer of hilarity to this absurd story

I've always wanted to go to the Pacific northwest and I know that there are plenty of rational people up there, but the proliferation of these nutjobs up there make me not want to drop a single cent into their economy.

My sister lives in Portland. Its a great place to live.

They just have a lot of idiots like this you just have to ignore. Same as ignoring dumb rednecks in the South.

Idiots everywhere, just different types of them.

Holy. frick.

So what are we supposed to cook? Everyone in America is an immigrant, somewhere down the line. All of our food originated somewhere else.

I hate this world.

We're talking about a burrito place, right?

Can you really "steal" recipes for a tortilla? We're not talking about a truffle garnished foie gras at the Savoy.
