I guarantee that a black person could go into Portland and open any kind of restaurant they want and nobody would say a word. Same with a Hispanic or middle easterner. Its only because they are white that people are hating on them.

I went to Belize for my honeymoon. It is in-fricking-sane how many Chinese restaurants there are in that country. It's like McDonalds in the south. They are everywhere.

I don't see folks kicking and screaming about how Belizeans are stealing the culture from the Chinese. I guess most of these Belizeans aren't white.

How folks don't see the irony in their racist ways......had these chicks been anything but white, no one would give a frick.

Someone even put together a hate list of white owned restaurants to go after.

quote:

Immediately after the fury continued online, a different resource emerged and quickly went viral: a Google doc showing exactly how prevalent this epidemic is. The list titled “White-Owned Appropriative Restaurants in Portland” provides a who’s who of culinary white supremacy.

If I were one of those restaurants on that list, I would take pleasure in suing the frick out of whoever wrote it for libel until they became poor.

I appropriated the frick out of some culture last night when I made a chicken quesadilla for dinner.

It was delicious.

what about all the SouthEast Texas "Cajun" / "Creole" / "Orleans" style restaurants? They can just steal the next state over's culture like that?

Here you thought you liked your quesadilla because it's delicious.....turns out you're just genetically predisposed to "culinary appropriation."

I'm surprised no one else has thought of this. Sue the crap out of that woman who called them thieves.

These SJWs should all travel down to wherever these women went on vacation, and patronize all these victimized Mexicans. Then they should sponsor and house them in Portland so that they can make their tortillas there in such an "inclusive" environment. Will it happen? HA.

This is a serious question. Is how Italian is pizza? When you think about "classic American food" you think hamburgers, hotdogs... pizza... But it is also associated with being Italian.

Mexican food as most Americans know it is as American as A fortune cookie

I thought burritos were a solely American creation?
they are

the burrito that we know today, and the one that these women were making, was invented in san francisco

from yelp:
quote:

Holy shite -- this story makes me sick to my stomach.
=]2 white folks seriously went to my nana's hometown as tourists (on stolen land), and came back with stolen tortilla recipes? This fake shite will never be as good as the tortillas that have been passed down from generation to generation. They taste even worse than they sound.=
For some reason, these white folks drove all the way to Mexico for handmade tortillas when they could have gone to Portland Mercado, Santa Cruz, the carts on killingsworth ans MLK, etc.

This restaurant is exactly why I lie to white people about my tortilla recipe. Settler colonialism is not over.

And it tastes like it's made for the white pallet.

Girl, a Tortilla is Flour, Lard, Water, and salt. Ain't no body stole your nana's recipe.

quote:

I love Portland, but I don't love people who steal recipes and cooking methods without compensating for them. Shame. If I were this business, I'd start donating a portion of the profit to the business you stole from so they could be able to afford curtains. Or donate to some other poor area of the country you decided would be profitable to rob. At least do some kind of PR move so you can pretend you care and maybe make this criticism go away. -.- P.S. In the future, don't proudly admit you felt entitled to steal something by peeking in a window, because they wouldn't hand it over to you for a reason.

quote:

How would you people feel if I went and spied on your family or business recipes and took it somewhere else for my own financial benefit? This is stealing, it was specifically said that the women didn't want to you their recipe and you ladies continued to invade their privacy and take notes. If you want to profit from someone's culture it should be your own, something you started or something your family made, not what someone else's family worked hard to do and keep alive.

quote:

This food tastes like the best intentions of culture vultures, so depending on how bland you like your spicy this may work for you.

Maybe instead of stealing recipes from Mexican women who use this as a sole form of livelihood, these young women should focus their intention on making their community more inclusive to vendors of color who actually know what they're doing.

Maybe their food would taste better, probably not, but at least I wouldn't be eating macgyvered overpriced burritos.

Does the appropriation come extra??

The place is the worst:

It's actually Chinese food, but they have some random bourbon chicken dish. I guess that somehow qualifies it as Cajun food?

Yeah, well, Portland was never part of Mexico, so you should probably hit the road, colonialist

I come across CHinese or Asian people, or hell anyone in the North trying their spin on Cajun food. It isn't anything like actual Cajun food. Is this cultural appropriation? Or the same people bitching about this shite wouldn't say anything about this because they aren't white?

I couldnt care less if Mexican food is made by Chinese or whoever, if it's good I'll buy it.
