1. A career that pays more money, it's something you are good at but you dont get to spend as much time with family and the wife. You get better retirement benefits and social security in the long run.
2. A job that pays $16 an hour and you get to spend more time with family and friends having vacation and etc. You do get retirement benefits but it's not as good as having a career. But its something. You also have summers off and still get paid but not as much during the year.
This is a buddy of mine, just wanted to see what you guys opinion on this was. I would take career all day. Especially if it's something I enjoy doing.

If you're working a job making $16 an hour your vacation options will be extremely limited and you will not have as much time as you think with your family because you'll be trying to grab all the OT or extra shifts to pay the bills.

Most everyone agrees that money doesn't buy happiness, but everyone also will say a little more money will help happiness a little more.

this would be a raise for some of our posters on the rant

I'd have to make major life adjustments to live on $16 per hour. It could be done but it wouldn't be fun.

Do 1 for a couple of years, become great at what you do and negotiate a better vacation with whoever hires you away. It sounds like you and your skill set are worth more than $16/hr.

Does not compute.
To be honest, I went with option #1 and I feel sometimes that I rarely get time at home but when it does come time for a vacation. I spare no expense and it is all worth it.

I agree it cant buy it, but it puts a great down payment on it.

You could never raise a family or go on vacations on $16/hour.
However, if you raised it to an amount where you could do those things (say $35/ hour), then I'd go with option #2.
I remember a mentor telling me years ago that no one lying on his deathbed will ever say that he regrets not having worked just a few more hours in his lifetime for just a little bit more money.

What the hell kind of a job pays $16 an hour and has summers off?

This will soon be minimum wage at McDonalds.
Option 1 for me.

Does number one pay triple? If it just pays a little more money, than obviously number two. However, there are a ton of jobs that have the best of both options. Do what you need to do to live your life like a boss, especially if you are only in your 30s.

#2 would make life a lot more difficult. You’d be making less than $30k, since you make less in the summer.
We value time together in our house, but we wouldn’t have a house if we made so little.

not even an OT baller but, i don't know how we'd live off of $16hr.

Your absolutes (only Choices #1 or #2(heh,heh)) don’t exist in a vacuum in the real world.
There’s an almost infinite number of intermediate choices between them.
I’ve got the best parts of your Choices 1 and 2 without the crappier parts.
Look for a career in something the Internet can’t (at least easily) do and the good firms in those fields.
