You'll have to take my word for it, but the answer is 2 of the 7 states Obama has visited that are not represented by stars on the flag.

No clue how this is getting judged, but if it is on delta, then Adak, AK to San Diego is 3213 miles as the crow flies, while Metlakatla, AK to Yontocket, CA is 973 miles, a difference of 2240 miles.

Maybell, CO - Los Fresnos, TX: 1,505 miles
Campo, CO - Kerrick, TX: 48 miles
As the crow flies Maybell to Los Fresnos is 1140 miles. Campo to Kerrick is 46 miles. 1094 delta.

Port Arthur, TX - Fort Dick, CA: 2,371 miles
El Paso, TX - Blythe, CA: 563 miles
El Paso to Blythe is 488 miles. Port Arthur to Fort Dick is 1872 miles. Delta of 1384. I don't think this can be topped in the lower 48.
Closest I can get is Fish Haven, ID to Texline, TX - 595 miles and Porthill, ID to Brownsville, TX - 1896 miles, for a delta of 1301 miles.
ETA: As the crow flies Brownsville to Fort Dick is 1874 miles, so that makes the delta 1386 miles for Texas and California.

This sounds like something that should be answered in the form of a question.

Illinois Michigan close at the southern point.
ETA- maybe not. They share a border in Lake Michigan

right, same concept as being divided by a river.

After staring at the OP's question for 30 seconds I'm inferring he's been asked a riddle and wants the answer. Either the riddle is simple and has been misunderstood by the OP or it is a word game designed to mislead the riddled rather than ask an interesting question.
If the question means which two states (which do not have a common border) are the closer to each other than any other state, but also the furthest distance apart of any two states to fall into that category? The answer to that (without using google) would seem like Hawaii and Alaska - ETA probably Alaska and Washington since I assume the closest requirement must apply to both states?
If the riddle is a different sort of language trick then it might mean the closest two points are determined closest by drawing a straight line (e.g. across block island sound from long island NY to the sort of neighboring state of Rhode Island)... and the second half of the question refers to the "line" drawn across furthest possible distance traveled (by going all the way around the globe in the opposite direction). The interesting, but stupid, tidbit about solving the riddle in this way is that the closest and furthest points in the two states are actually the same point.

That is how I originally understood it, but there are no four points that would qualify a state as both the closest and farthest from one another. Even with Hawaii and Alaska, which are the two that popped into my head also, the "furthest" points pale in comparison to Hawaii's distance between basically any state east of the Rockies. Regardless of which state you choose, the closest state to that choice will never be the furthest state as well.

I did the math and used Google Earth to do it.
The answer is Alaska and California.
The tip of the Aleutian Islands to the southern most point of California is 5377 km as a crow flies. The closest part of Alaska to California is 1528 km, leaving 3849 km being the farthest apart they can be.
Nowhere in the US can you get this high of a "delta" with the same distance.
