re: Which is better: Mountain Brook or Buckhead?

Mountain Brook and it’s not even close. The school system alone would be worth it. The amount of kids they put into Ivy League schools is amazing. Mountain Brook is surrounded by Homewood and Vestavia, two excellent communities. Buckhead is surrounded by Atlanta.

But Buckhead has far more access to diversity
And much more access to being robbed and\or shot by said diversity.

Old money vs new money.
There’s plenty of both in both of them. Take a drive down W Paces Ferry in Buckhead and try to claim it’s new money.
The two really aren’t comparable though. I wouldn’t really want to live in either other than a few certain areas in them.

Mountain Brook is great, clean, and quality.
Buckhead is quickly becoming the opposite.

As a single male, Buckhead. If I were a family man, Mountain Brook.

Just went on a date with a Mountain Brook High grad. She claims she had one of the worst ACT scores in her graduating class with a 27.
I'm currently living in an apartment in Mtn Brook and it's easily the best community I've ever lived in, even as a single man. Super walkable and the people out and about on the sidewalks seem nice. I've dropped 10lbs in the past three months from all the walking I've added on top of my usual running. Maybe the pretentious pricks are behind the country club walls? It is depressing knowing that I'm just renting here for a time and that I couldn't afford a home here. But I'll enjoy it while I'm here.

Wife and I lived in the apartments that used to be where the Grand Bohemian is now when we first got married. It was nice having Starbuck's, Gilchrist, and Davenport's Pizza walking distance. There was also a good Jewish deli next to the Western. Browdy's I think was the name of it.
Our place flooded though, along with both of our cars, and they let us out of our lease. 2 totaled cars and all of our furniture ruined. Luckily we had renter's insurance. Water was almost waist deep in our apartment. I guess that was around 2002.

If you are raised in Mountain Brook your surroundings do not represent the rest of the country.
This would be my concern with Mountain Brook. It’s too comfortable for my liking, if that makes sense.
I wouldn’t want to live in Atlanta, though. If these are my only two options, I wouldn’t feel great about either.
ETA: I would prefer upscale hoods in Nashville (Belle Meade), Charlotte (Myers Park), Richmond (West End), Raleigh (ITB), etc. which IMO provide a little more balance as upscale, safe communities without feeling completely contained in a Stepford-like bubble.

My run group uses the sidewalks in Homewood and Mountain Brook for our routes. The amount of people out there on Saturday mornings is impressive.
We chose not to keep up with the Jones. My wife didn’t want to move back. We compromised on Cahaba Heights and have been here for 25 years. I can hear the Mountain Brook high school band when they play for football games.

Milf count in mountain brook is strong and the country club is insanely nice

People in Mountain Brook have money, folks in Buckhead have damn good credit.
People on this board have no idea that the huge majority of Buckhead isn't the commercial area or malls
The Buckhead neighborhoods/residential streets are the real heart of Buckhead and many are in a completely different league than MB, it's not really comparable.
All that said, Mountain Brook is probably the better all around choice if you're looking to raise a family and live a regular, upscale life. If you need access to an international airport, big sports teams, and genuine fine dining/arts, then yeah, you'll need to choose Buckhead.
But as a former Buckhead resident I'd have a tough time recommending it to people right now.

There are two country clubs in Mt Brook - Bham CC and Mountain Brook CC. Both are very nice.
According to a friend of mine that lives in MB, there's a pretty healthy swinger scene there as well.

Correct and both are very nice. The Bham club is not far from the Mt brook club which I thought odd but New Orleans and Metairie clubs are close so maybe not so odd.
Not sure about the swinger scene.

Buckhead if you have an affinity for getting robbed.

Way too different to compare.
This. And the answer is Mountain Brook. Buckhead has been a ghetto for some time.

Not a bad decision. The way Cahaba Heights is trending, you'll be getting MB money for your house when they cart you off to the Old Folks Home.

Birmingham is a golf mecca for a city of its size. You have those two (which is three courses) and Old Overton right outside of the lower end of MB which are all different and fantastic. Vestavia and even middle of the road Pine Tree are not all that that far from MB with PT being one of the underrated courses in all of Alabama. And then the pubic offerings are not all that far away

I think the lack of more affordable public courses holds it back a little. Sure, there are the RTJ courses and Highland Park, but all 3 of those places can be pretty pricey, especially on the weekends. The course at Oak Mt State Park is probably the best value in town, but not all the conveniently located. Roebuck used to be decent, but I haven't played there in years. Is Heatherwood the only other public course in town? I think it's semi-private, so open to the public. The only time I played it, I hated the layout. I guess you could consider the muni course in Bessemer(Frank House, I think it's called) part of the metro area, and I think there's a semi-private course in Trussville.
