Climate & Weather (all 4 seasons, and a break from tropical storms)

Cost of Living (think of auto and homeowners' insurance as examples)

Work Opportunities

Accessibility & Travel (friends and family flying in/out of to spend time together)

Outdoor Activities & Lifestyle

Traffic & Communte (ideally, living close to but not necessarily in a big city -- would be ideal to find a job in a suburb and only go to the city when necessary or for fun and time isn't an issue)

Healthcare

Education (colleges)

Long-term growth (investment in real estate - meaning your house won't depreciate and there is some growth) & Sustainability

Greenville SC and Somewhere near Little Rock or Hot Springs AR are on my short list.

I want to get out of the concrete parking lot of Houston. I want big woods, clear running streams and rivers, and elevation change. Just big enough to have a good grocery store and Amazon 2nd day delivery.

10 years ago I looked at college towns with mild summers, nearby airport, walkable downtown, affordable living, and outdoor activities. I looked at Burlington, VT; Ithaca, NY; Madison, Wisconsin; Boulder, CO; and Boise, Idaho.
They all had a lot of upside to them.

My only issue with college towns is that they tend to skew pretty far left compared to your average town, which can create some pretty shitty (literally shitty, like homeless shitting in the streets) situations.

Eugene, Oregon would be an incredible place to live if you could trust local leadership not to be crazy. But you can't.

I’ve always wanted to move to Wyoming. Somewhere rural. Out of the way. I won’t because family will always keep me here but that’s where I’d go.

And the wind is what makes it so bad.

This whole area of upstate SC is pretty nice weather wise. It also provides things on your list.

My issue with these desires is accessibility. Unless you own your own plane people can’t easily visit and getting to places is difficult. Any major health problem makes this nearly impossible.

I have lived in Harrisonburg, VA for years. There is a major college here-JMU. Yes it does lean slightly left but does not affect my life in any way. This town is like Mayberry. I hope none of my other Louisiana peeps find out about low crime or they will all be up here soon .

I have a friend who moved to the USA from Bulgaria about 10 years ago. He plans to retire to Roanoke. He’s seen quite a bit of the country and that’s where he wants to live.
