I was in college, I didn't have classes on Tuesday & Thursday that semester, but I had an appointment that morning.. I still remember it was at 9:30AM. I was going to sleep until 8:15AM that morning, but someone came over and told me to put it on the news because an airplane just hit one of the twin towers. It was less than a minute after turning on the TV when the second plane flew in the other tower. It actually took several seconds after it happened to actually process that it had actually happened.
With one plane I was thinking it could have been some type of mistake, but when the second one hit, it was clear it was some type of attack. We just sat and watched the news in disbelief. I had to leave to go to my appointment and I remember every single radio station had coverage of what just happened. When I got to my appointment, the atmosphere wasn't the feeling of an average day. When I went to check in, I remember a receptionist was worried and kept trying to call her daughter, who was in NYC.
I think most professors/instructors at LSU cancelled class that day, I just remember meeting up with friends, who had class but learned their class had been canceled. One friend said he went to class and his instructor walked in crying, tried to compose herself then just told the class she was sorry, but she wasn't in any state of mind to be able to hold class and canceled it.
Whenever the reports came in about the Pentagon and the other plane that crashed before it was able to get to its destination, the mood went from sad/upset to sad/upset and concerned just because no one knew if there were other attacks planned and if so, where would they happen.
For months after the attacks it felt that everyone in this country was for what's best for the country as a whole. Everyone had pride in being Americans and not divided by parties.. If you were an American it felt as if those attacks were personal.

Freshman year at LSU in my dorm room in Annie Boyd. Originally thought it was an anniversary of the incident that happened previously and then saw the 2nd plane slam into the tower.
Went to class, though majority were cancelled, except for my one science class where the teacher said "while this is horrible, we need to learn about science to take our mind off of it."

I worked with a guy who was on an aircraft carrier between Hawaii and San Diego on 9/11 visiting his brother who was an F-18 pilot ( some sort of program for the families of people on the ship where they could experience carrier life). They were heading to SD for the end of the trip but once they got word of what happened, the captain said they were making an about face and the whole ship went on lockdown. He said he was about 12 and was scared shitless because they told him he was essentially going with them to a potential war zone. Couple hrs later they decided they would continue on to SD as planned.

I was in college at the time. I was laying in bed next to the future Mrs Bourre nursing a major hangover. I turned on the tv right before the 2nd plane hit and we watched it happen in disbelief

In Dallas. Used to wake up to Howard Stern and he mentioned a plane had hit the world trade center but no other info was available. I figured it was some little cesna. By the time I was leaving for work I heard 2 planes had hit the WTC. Only took me 2 minutes to get to work and we all sat there listening to the horror unfold.

English 4 senior year HS. My teacher was a narcoleptic and we had to wake him up to turn on the TV. He turned it on CNN right before the news of the second plane hit.
The administration told everyone not to go home, and my rents flipped their shite and snatched me up anyway
My 17 year old self didn't process it for a day or two. It seemed like a movie or something

I was on active duty in the military.

At work heard about the first plane on the radio. They said it was a small private plane.
Called my wife at home and said turn off Barney and put on CNN. As soon as she changed the channel the second plane hit and she shrieked. My kids started crying and I asked her what was going on. Between the kids and her freaking out I couldn't get a read on what she was saying. She settled down and described it to me and I couldn't believe it.
Logged on to cnn.com and watched it streaming in the Internet in my office.

I was in college. I remember I had a trig test that day that I hadn't studied for and I was relieved when that class was canceled for the day and I didn't have to take the test. Felt like a total POS once I realized the magnitude of the situation.

I didn't even know there was a WTC in New York. When I first heard about it, I thought they were talking about New Orleans and then realized it was NYC when the TV got turned on.
GWB was pretty composed in his speech. I know I wouldn't have been

I had dropped the wife off at work and was on my way to Lowe's when NPR announced that a small plane had accidentally hit one of the world trade center towers, didn't think too much of it. On the way back from Lowe's NPR broke in again to say a second small plane had hit the other tower and maybe it wasn't an accident. NPR was clueless. When I got home I put the TV on and called my folks who hadn't heard and we watched the first tower fall while talking on the phone.

In middle school. They didn't mention it at school. No one knew until we got on the bus to go home that afternoon.

Heard about the first plane hitting on the radio listening to Mancow when driving to college to go to my Differential Equations class. They kept talking about it like it was a small plane.
Walked in to school and saw it on TV in one of the student common areas in the building and thought that was complete garbage that a Cessna or something did that. Just as I was about to go to class, the second plane hit. Ran into the class and yelled at the teacher what happened and the whole class came out and to watch. School called off classes for the rest of the day after that class and I went home and watched the towers fall.
Bonus, I also had a blind date later that night, chick ended up looking like a 10 year old boy. Suffered through dinner and was the first time I really considered ditching a date. She talked about how other dudes picked up girls while with her on dates. Was a total downer, so she had no personality to go with her very unappealing body for a non pedo like myself. She tried to get me to come over to her place, but I couldn't do it and I had been through a bad dry streak at that point. That was my 9/11, saw the worst and best in people that day, but I'm no pedophile.

You know who wasn't clueless? Howard Stern. That day's show was great. He hit a lot of it right on the head that day.

Was a freshman at LSU. Turned on the tv in the morning and virtually every channel had some sort of coverage or directing you where to find it. Took a little while to realize what happened.
Reading some of these posts makes me feel old. Especially from whomever said they were in second grade.
