Just did this with my family. Interstate 10 to Ft Stockton and up to Carlsbad. The caverns are awesome. Drive up to interstate 40 and head to Gallup,New Mexico and eat at Jerrys cafe for the best New Mexican food on the planet. After that drive the loop through the painted desert and petrified forest. Then on to Grand Canyon.
Many here are knocking the drive through NM but I find it interesting.

What is New Mexican food exactly?

It's like Mexican kinda but with mostly pork and a TON of green chiles

El Paso is nothing special, but you could stay at Camino Real for the night and cab it to the bridge, walk across to Juarez and get your street tacos, tequila, prepago, and visit the farmacia. There is good mexican food in EP as well, and Dreams Cabaret isn't bad for some mexican T&A. I'll meet up with you in EP if you want and we can drink some beers, find some blow and senoritas.
Scottsdale/Tempe is worth a stop just for the palm trees, happy hours, and whores. Although the ASU girls won't be back for another month and it is hot as frick this time of year.
Other than San Antonio, El Paso/Juarez, and Phoenix there isn't anything worth stopping for on the I-10 route (assuming you don't give a shite about rivers, hill country, caverns, white sands, Joshua trees, etc)

I drove the opposite way on I-10 once, Monterey CA to NOLA, looooooooong arse drive. Texas seems like the longest part end to end. I was so ready to get to NOLA I only wanted to stop for gas food and sleep.

And i thought it would be spicey in a good way or something good. I found it drowning. And every damn meal they pour that shite on. Not a fan, but whatever. I was in tourist sante fe fwiw.

You need to go stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona. Such a fine sight to see.

Is that where the ghost lights are?

Go north to No. Arizona. Spend a night in Flagstaff, hit a bar, bang a Mex-American coed. Pretty country too.

I've made the drive from New Orleans to the San Francisco and back several times. I can't think of a single "must see" destination that is on I-10 between New Orleans and Los Angeles. It is mostly desert once you get west of San Antonio. The closest places worth going are the Grand Canyon and Carlsbad Cavern. I'd just drive to Ft. Stockton, TX spend the night and then get to Los Angeles the next day.
If you want to detour, do it on the return drive when you can take more time.

I can detour either way. Pretty much am open schedule. If I'm gonna be stopping a bunch of places, I'll probably budget 3 days there and 2 back

I enjoyed taking the I-40 route instead of the I-10 route. Dallas to Amarillo stretch kinda sucks but I think it is alot better than SA to El Paso stretch.
Last time I finally had some time and saw some Breaking Bad sites in Albuquerque and driving through Flagstaff is awesome scenery.
I have stayed at a cool place outside Seligman, AZ on Route 66 called The Stagecoach 66 Motel a few times.
If you take I-10 route, Vegas is a good ways out of the way, better off taking 40

I agree with this 100% That first view of the Grand Canyon will leave you silent for a few minutes. Pictures really do not do it any justice to just how vast it is.

See the Grand Canyon. Not going to be much time for many stops. I love the desert so just driving it is fun to me.
