I'm not a fan of long drives either, but the route is really "Americana" .. We are going to stop a lot and take in a lot of things, so the drives will hopefully be not as bad .. Of course, I will be the geek working in some minor league baseball games along the way ..

That's a bigger detour than you might think, but that's going to be a nice trip.

Not planning on staying in Vegas, and I'll be good if I can just drive through and stop somewhere for a couple of minutes in the GC

Day 1: New Orleans - Amarillo
Day 2: Amarillo - Denver
Day 3: Denver - Vegas
Day 4: Vegas - LA

Not the shortest route, but worth it. Night stays in Denver and Vegas.

You do realize the Grand Canyon is 60 miles north of I-40? Then you have to pay a fee (like $12 a car iirc) to enter the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Then park and find a place to see the canyon. There are several viewpoints at the rim to see that you can walk(total length is a couple miles) or take the free shuttles from spot to spot. Place is always full of tourists as well(usually foreign tourists from Asia or Europe...which is kinda fun to people watch).

After doing all that you are really gonna want to spend more than just a few minutes there.

I love where US 64 hits I-25 in Raton. That's an incredible view. Then you drive through the pass into Colorado. After a while it flattens out and you drive on the plain with the front range right beside you. There are so many great drives out West.

60 miles isn't that much, and I thought I could just drive by, get out, look, and be on my way like in Joe Dirt (seriously). Asians annoy me. I might skip it if that is the case

Everyone at the Grand Canyon is full blown German.

Yeah it's not that easy there. That park is the only way to really see the Grand Canyon on the south rim unless you go to the Skywalk thing (which is expensive and a total tourist trap).

They are EVERYWHERE there with massive cameras taking pics every 5 seconds. Every time I go there I always see them by the bus load. And now I would imagine it will be Asian Selfie Stick City there with the popularity of selfie sticks.

Wow .. the thing costs about $100 to walk on, you can't bring any cameras or personal items on it -- you have to leave those in a locker that you probably have to rent, and the only way you get pictures is if you buy their pictures ..

Yeah, they used to always be on the crossovers on the causeway taking pictures and doing karate and peekachoo or whatever. If I've got to spend a long time just to see it and then listen to them talk, I think I'll take a rain check until I retire or something.

So the grand canyon is out. Anywhere else on that list I should avoid?

Eta: Looking into helicopter tours now. If I can get one by myself, I'll probably end up doing it

It will definately add time to your trip but you could go from the south rim of the Grand Canyon east around the canyon to the beginning of the Canyon and then on to Southern Utah (Vermilion Cliffs , Zion National Park etc..) on the way to Vegas....

Yep it's a total rip off by the Native American tribe that owns that land. Had a friend that did it and he said it was a cool view and all...but that is the only view you get of the GC there. He thought maybe after doing the Skywalk he could walk around and check out views from the rim...nope, not possible. They charge $$ to park there as well. They also make you wear special booties on your feet(or they used to) so your shoes don't scratch up the glass bottom).

I wanted to go when it first opened here but after my friend did it I decided it wasn't worth the money.

I just moved to northern California from San Antonio a few months ago. I took 10 all way, then up of course. Once you leave S.A., its an awful drive. Go north for the scenic route.

Might want to find a different route from Arizona to LA if you're traveling there soon. Floodwaters wash out, shut down part of I-10 in Southern California
