When we moved out here from Louisiana we stopped in Dallas, Roswell NM, and Sedona AZ

West Texas and most of New Mexico are the most desolate lonely aweful places I've ever been. Northern Arizona is georgeous.

We took a route further north than 10. The route along I10 may be a little shorter but you might as well just drive across the Mexican desert.

Road tripping is all about stopping and checking out what you find along the way.

Vegas isn't a big draw for me. I mean, if I'm going that way I'd check it out. Not going way out of the way just to stop there though

Grand Canyon would be the same route you'd have to get up to 40.

I know you said you aren't into gambling, but when I make that drive, I stop in Laughlin, NV. It's on the Colorado River and cheap hotel rooms and play cards and craps.

Free booze. What's not to like?

Go up to Dallas, drive the State highway to Amarillo, (both good stopping points depending on the amount of hours you like to drive. You will drive past Cadillac Ranch.
LINK

There is some great bbq out there too.

Then you want to shoot over to Albuquerque, you can stop there or santa fe. Both are worth seeing. Take 40 in. I prefer I-40 to I-10 because much of that I-10 stretch is horribly boring, while I-40 gets more interesting, as the plains become desert, then mountainous desert then mountains. If you drive at night you can pull over and see more stars than you ever saw in your life, it's just so dark.
I also like 40, because it takes you near the Grand Canyon (which you need to see if you haven't) and also through the painted desert and the petrified forest.
You then take 40 into California past the Mohave and meet up with I-15 and go to LA.

This is the more scenic route and more enjoyable if you have days on your trip. The northern route also takes you close to Colorado and Las Vegas. You could actually got up to the Hoover Damn, then on to Vegas or just see the Dam and then get on I-15 into the LA.

Of course you can take I-10.
I-10 if you want speed, as you can legally average 80mph through Texas. San Antonio is a good stop. See the Alamo and the Riverwalk. I don't like El Paso, but if you are tired when you near there, you could at least say you went, I would try to soldier on to Tuscon at least. That part of New Mexico is barren, right by White Sands (the Trinity bomb site) and the only interesting thing near there may be Roswell, but even that is just a tourist trap.
Arizona is nice, Tuscon then not far away Phoenix, just not many big places to say stop, unless it was for a nice restaurant or a bar.
Then of course I-10 goes to LA.

If you want a quicker trip take ten. If you want a better road trip, go up to I-40

OP if you think you've lived in a shite town I suggest New Mexico. Some areas in north NM are out of a horror novel.

Really once you are past the hill country Texas looks like hell.

It's summer I suggest Colorado. Also Nevada. Lake Mead is awesome to see and I've never been but I've never heard anyone say "Lake Tahoe sucks." It maybe too far out of way though. Pay attention to your gas in NM. There are long stretches of desolation. Probably as bad as Nevada to LA.

We drove from Houston to Durango. Parts of New Mexico will make you get on your hands and knees to kiss BR soil and you'll never speak ill of her again.

I'm on I-40 right now in CA and it's scenic as hell(we had to make a huge detour cause of that massive tanker fire on the 15 that happened today).

I-10 through west Texas is the most miserable drive ever....but faster if you need to get there quicker.

Don't drive your vehicle over the border. There are stories of US citizens vehicles getting impounded in Mexico.

I've driven back and forth between NOLA and Southern California a bunch of times. If you want to cross the border, take I10, stop in Ft Stockton your first night, then continue on 10 to I8, which you will come to in Casa Grande, AZ

Take I8 to San Diego, park your vehicle in one of the many parking lots right on the border by Tijuana. The lots have a shuttle bus that brings you right across the border, drops you off a few blocks inside Mexico, and walk around Tijuana. Coming back into the US, you go through Customs, walk out a side door to the shuttle bus and it brings you back to your car. Make sure you have your drivers license or passport with you on your return to US or they won't let you back in. A guy I went with once lost his wallet in Tijuana and he was SOL when we went through customs. It's worth going to the border to see the cluster**** that it is. Thousands of people and cars crossing everyday.

Take I5 from San Diego to LA. Very scenic drive.

If you want to go to Vegas, take I15 from LA to Las Vegas. Not that far a drive.

I love driving the I10/ I8 route.

I like the ghost towns, desolate stretches of leftover Route 66, interstate exits made of dirt and gravel leading to highways made of dirt roads, and of course long stretches with no gas in site. Still I think it's more enjoyable than San Antonio to El Paso. Plus it takes you through north Arizona which is up there with I-70 in Colorado and I-40 in TN and NC as far as scenery and natural beauty on the interstate.

Vegas you can skip, but it's only about 1.5-2 hours out of the way to go by Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. You get on I-15 to LA.

frick that fire. We aren't getting in till after midnight now because of that crap.

Guess I should just be thankful we weren't the unlucky ones that lost their cars in the fire.

Phoenix area is awesome. There are some cool towns between there and LA not far off I-10 as well. Texas is boring. New Mexico and Arizona are beautiful but the sun in your eyes as it sets is tough to drive in.
