Simple question: Where/what are the good areas of San Antonio and surrounding areas?

Suburbs - just inside 1604 and North of 1604 between hwy 16 and 281

San Antonio es mi ciudad...mi gente
It depends on what you're looking for. Wife and I bought a house in the Alamo Ranch area over by Loop 1604 and Culebra (SeaWorld area). We love it, but it's one of, if not the fastest-growing zip codes in the state the past year or so. Lot of traffic, but they've expanded parts of the loop and cleaned up the 1604/Hwy 151 intersection. Very close to Fiesta Texas and La Cantera and the like. Mostly middle aged folks.
When I was a kid, my dad was stationed over at Randolph AFB, so I'm a little familiar with that side of town as well (Universal City/Converse/Live Oak/Kirby/et al). Little bit older and heavy military presence (but that's really all over the city, let's be honest ).
I've heard Stone Oak is nice, and I actually work near there (Blanco Rd.), but I'm not as familiar with it.

Just moved here. Cool place. Wouldn't commute to SA from here though.

I am up in north SA, in the Stone Oaks area. Stationed at FSH. No knowledge of what south SA is like. Alamo Heights is in the city so I am not sure if that is the way to go. But I would try to find a place as close to Elmendorf as possible. Traffic is incredible here in SA (second time stationed here).

I think there are some more new neighborhoods springing up on the SW side along Hwy 90, too.

Nice I work just south in Floresville
I love on the southeast side of SA proper. 25 min commute but there's maybe 3 lights, even fewer to Elmendorf. Not bad at all.

I live close to 1604 and Marbach, and there is traffic everywhere. Culebra and 1604 is a nightmare, but the area is nice.
