I've been wondering about this myself lately. The wife and I have lived most of our adult lives here, but really nothing tying us to south Louisiana (no family here), so I've been contemplating moving somewhere else when we retire. You scoff at Arkansas, but I think northern Arkansas could be nice. But I've really been leaning toward Tennessee. I hear lots of good things about it. It has seasons, it has mountains and great outdoor things to do. Centrally located to a lot of other cool places. Not crazy liberal. Not too expensive. I'm thinking I could be quite happy living somewhere in TN.

I’m not sure that place is as important as “connection.”

At some level, being near family and friends has a lot of value.

I mean.if I move to a tropical paradise, golf Mecca, low cost area, whatever the criteria are, I’ll need to make new friends and maintain a connection to the old.

I guess I’ll see where my kids land IF and when the time comes to move and try to be within a connecting flight or 350 miles so they don’t have to spend all of their time on the road IF they want to see me. Or if my health allows, meeting for a vacation would be awesome. We did a big family NYC trip and it was awesome.

Short answer: figure out what works for you. It may be a low cost southern state, a small place at the beach or mountains, it may even be in a moderate sized city- having good access to specially care can become important as you age.

Also, try out some places. Live there for a month in winter and summer. See what it is really like.

Nice option, a lot cooler than southern AZ and geographically nicely located. But like most parts of the country, the nice areas in AZ (Gilbert, chandler, Scottsdale, flagstaff) housing market is crazy high.

I looked after I posted that and I was shocked at how little $250k could get you. $500k for that matter.

If you’re retired, there were some decent condos. Not big but if you’re just wanting a couple of bedrooms and bathrooms it would work.

There, Taos, or Cloudcroft would be my type of life for retirement given the opportunity. I don’t mind a bit of cold or heat but moderate temps all year are money.

It is, some people are still 5 decades in the past.

Go for it, life's too short to be trapped.

There's enough OOS people ruining Arkansas already. Try Kentucky instead

Talk to me about Boulder.

45 minutes from Denver, 45 minutes from the mountains, lots of golf courses, mountain air, no hood rats.

For me, it needs to be a place without:

hurricanes
earthquakes
drought
endless rain
months of subfreezing temps
ridiculously priced real estate
masks
fear of being shot

North Mississippi.

They don't tax retirement income, it's affordable, and the weather in that stretch between Tupelo-Olive Branch is pretty benign outside of the occasional tornado outbreak.

But in the summer you'll sweat more than a fat kid in dodgeball.
