When you know the end is coming for a pet...it sucks

Have a cat that is turning 19 today.
She's actually still pretty spry, moving around and jumping from couch to chair, but has been steadily losing weight for the last few months and has become quite unsteady.
Doubt she makes it to 20 and it sucks.
Pets are insidious creatures that worm their way into you heart.

Indeed they do. I’ve had to put one dog down in my adult life and don’t look forward to doing it again.

Cats aren’t pets.
In all seriousness, losing a pet sucks. I’ve lost two dogs in my life.

When I was younger we had a cat that lived for near 23 years.
I literally grew up with it.
Other pets came and went, but that one was the hardest.
Went from being 4-5 years old to an adult on my own and she was always at my parents.

I’ve got a 15 year old Bassett hound now. I think this’ll be his last year. Sucks. He’s been with the family for a long time. We’ve been through 3 states and 4 houses. Gonna be a sad day in the perch house.

My Boxer is 10 and fighting cancer. I will never get another pet. This will be brutal.

That's true.
Dogs have owners
Cats have staff

My second dog was like that. She was a yellow lab that grew up with me throughout most of my life. 4 houses, 3 states, all of middle and high school and some of college. Such a sweet dog.
Right now I have two labs that are only a couple years old who are absolutely best friends. Hoping for a long, happy, and healthy life for each.

I know about the end of the life for a cat. They'll start losing weight, you'll notice how bony their neck/ scruff area will get. Then they won't clean themselves as well as they used to. Otherwise, sometimes you won't really notice. They tend to try to put on a "I'm ok" look, I assume for instinct.
It is sad no matter anyway a pet dies.

My dog from my youth lived almost 20 years. Halfway through his life he really became my Moms dog as I moved away for college and starting a life.
His last year he had gone blind but he could still smell and knew who was who and got around. I drove to my mother's house late one night from where I was living.
I got there really late and didn't want to wake anyone. He was there by the door and we spent a good ten minutes together. Him smelling me, remembering his old daddy.
Woke up in the morning and he had gone out to his favorite tree and died. I'm crying right now just remembering it. He had waited for me to come home and say bye. I buried him right there next to his tree.
It's been over twenty years ago and I still remember that feeling.

In the same boat but with two animals, a sixteen year old cat and a fifteen year old dog. Both still have healthy appetites and are active, but the signs of decline are obvious... loss muscle tone and a hind leg that locks up briefly for the cat, dog going blind and having issues jumping up on anything anymore.
Best pets I’ve ever had, greatest temperament and personality in both of them. Gonna be a bad day in the household when one goes, let alone both.

Amazing that the creatures can inhabit so many chapters of our lives.

My dog just turned 10 but he was diagnosed with diabetes last week.
I dread the day he passes on.

Worse is when you see a homeless pet on its last days. Just saw one with a collar running round downtown. Old hound dog

Make the most of your time. Fuss over her, and get pictures and video so you have relics.

I and my family will be absolutely heartbroken when our cat goes, FWIW.
My mom just had to go through this with the yellow lab I got her on a whim 13 years ago. She was hesitant when the dog was a puppy but over time it became her beloved pet; they were so close that they literally took on eachothers' personalities.
The day she had to put her down a couple weeks ago she sent me a simple text just saying "Thank you for getting me my best friend" and it made me cry like a baby. Still makes me tear up now.
