Confidence in what exactly?
Say your average engineer...more intelligent than 99%, much higher pay than the average, probably owns a home(non-renter), decent car(may be a honda, but decent)....what's he not confident in? say compared to an unemployed chain smoking druggie dead beat with tats who dodges calls from creditors? Is it maybe that he's not confident in the logical choice a girl will make?

Confident in himself. Maybe he is much better, but he could have zero self confidence. I know a few pretty successful guys that get quiet when a girl starts talking to them

more subjectivity. what instills confidence? I remember a practical joke that was played on a comedian where they set-up a fake audience who wouldn't laugh at anything he said. The guy lost his mind on stage and quit mid-set...was it he that didn't have confidence, or was it the response of the audience that removed all confidence he had?

Confidence doesn't come by what you own, yet comes by who you are as an individual. It has nothing to do with looks or your bank account. It has more to do with how you handle yourself when you don't necessarily have those things going for you.

My guess is the comedy was a cover-up for low self esteem
I don't know how to magically give people confidence

Not sure about that, I saw something about how 80% of gastric bypass patients divorce their spouse within 2 years of the surgery.
I think that shines light on that it's just about pass/fail on what you perceive you should be able to pull.
Gastric bypass? I was talking about an early 20's-ish chubby girl who's had weight issues since high school and decided to hit the gym, started eating right, and knocked off 30 to 50 (max) pounds. I'm not talking about hanging out at the short-stay unit at the hospital and trying to score gastric bypass patients pushing 3 bills.

Fat girls that get skinny have a new found freedom and are more susceptible to taking kindly to compliments to prove their self worth

I think you're right....when it comes to trashy women, and overly vain women. I think no matter what, most women come to the realization that looks and all of that will not make them happy in the long term, and people look different as they age....its a 100% chance everyone will age.
I encourage you do away with this mindset, because its simply not completely true.

You're comparing a practical joke to genuine interaction. The "response of the audience" in normal interaction is not purposely false as it is in your scenario. There's no parallel there.
If you're getting a "wouldn't laugh" response in real relationships, it's not a set-up. You're simply doing something wrong.

A girl touches your arm, gives you a look from afar, smiles in your direction.....these give you confidence. If you get no cues, then you're always going in dry. It's not a "I want him" scenario, it's a "uuhhh, welll, I guess he's cute enough to fleece for a few dinners before I friendzone him when the guy I really want comes around"

edit: you are also making the assumption that humans are entirely rational, when they actually are not. A person can have a great life on paper and still have low self-esteem. Sometimes it's a chronic problem that's followed them through life, sometimes it's due to recent hardships or emotional trauma. But pretty much everyone will have a crisis of self-esteem at some point in their lives.

This seems to be a bit of a chicken-and-the-egg conundrum.
Do you not have confidence because of cold reactions from women or do women react coldly because of your innate lack of confidence?
