Humans are extremely squishy when it comes to space exploration. We need to be figuring out ways to get past that. Mars is as far as we could realistic get a human and get him back if we wanted to badly enough. The earth and moon have gotten small. We need to move, expand, and adapt. The only way to do it is get the Facebook and Twitter generation on board. Like it or not they’re the vocal majority.

There isn't much there. I always liked the idea of using the moon as a forward base. It has gravity so things will stay there. Physical building of buildings wouldn't be that bad with lighter equipment as weights of items are less.
You build a rocket on the moon and it can blast off with a lot less power than an earth rocket, and can already be near the moon's slingshot gravity well. They could also in theory explore generating radioactive fuels on the moon since atmosphere is not a concern. There are some odd isotopes like Hydrogen-3 expected to be on the moon in abundance.
I'm all for building the space elevator, but carbon nanotube production is going to have to be perfected first.

If that motivation from the 1950s and 1960s continued onward, we would have been on Mars 20 years ago.
I mean, Titan is sitting out there, too. I figure we will have a rover on Titan in our lifetime.
