Will we ever? My understanding is that we have the knowledge and capabilities, but it’s a fiscal challenge at this point. Is deep space exploration the reason we may never go back? It would be so cool with today’s technology to see a moon landing.

Manned lunar missions don't have a great deal of scientific value. We did it for national pride.

Rovers are better suited for lunar (or Martian) surface exploration.

No it’s not a fiscal challenge. The National ink budget is literally higher than NASA’s. It’s a god damn disgrace we haven’t been up there since 1972. When July 20th 2019 passes us by, I’m going to be very drunk and pissed on that day mourning the fact that we’ve lost sight of our destiny.

Nothing would make me happier than for China to land on the Moon so we would get in a dick measuring contest again. If you made the Earth the size of a basketball, relative to size the Moon would be 30 feet across the room. On the same scale, do you want to know how far humanity has gone since 1972? 3/8 of an inch. So the dick measuring contest now is 30 feet vs 3/8 of an inch. If China landed on the Moon, you can bet your arse we’ll be walking on Mars within the decade.

That makes sense but how much could we really know about the surface of the moon nearly 50 years ago compared to what we are capable of learning today?

There’s no reason to go back. There’s no reason to go to Mars. We will explore the universe, but it will be with AI, probes, etc. Distances are too large to practically move people through space.
