And what was the situation?

I’ve been so busy lately I almost forgot about the time a few months ago when I left work for a doctor appointment, doing 55 in a 50 on a 4-lane highway and see a car coming towards me as I crested a hill. As I whipped it off to the shoulder, I see its an old lady in a old caprice classic or suck. with big wrap-around sun shade thing on her face and completely oblivious to the fact she’s hauling arse in the wrong direction. Had I not been paying attention, we both would’ve been toast.

2 weeks ago. Coming down the BR "new bridge eastbound in the left lane. I merge into the middle and someone ahead of me slams on their breaks. I quickly look in my mirror and the right lane is open. Good thing it was because if it wasn't, I would have probably rear ended that car pretty good.

Two months ago. Power poles had been torn down by 90mph straight line winds. Their electrical lines were stretched out across a curvy road I was driving before daylight (about 6 am), two+ months ago. Had to swerve last minute to avoid the lines (they still got left side of truck) and I hopped a ditch like Luke Duke into an empty field. Dash cam caught it all

Probably something I was completely oblivious to.

Went swimming on a cloudy day about 30 years ago. Was still in great shape and swam all the time. Thought it wouldn't be a big deal. Got about 50 yards from the beach (Nags Head, NC) and could not make it back. Recognized that I was in a riptide and started swimming as hard as I could along the shore. After I don't know how long had passed (probably only about 20-30 minutes) I finally made it to shore. Was exhausted. Learned my lesson after that, and paid attention to the signs.

Don't worry, I'll probably die from arse cancer or something far more painful.

I was using a table saw the other day and cutting in a way I shouldn't have been. Table saw grabbed the smaller piece of wood I was cutting and launched it into my nuts. In a moment of panic and shock I reached up to grab the other piece of wood without looking and I was millimeters away from grabbing the blade.

Not near death but that's the closest I've come to losing a finger in a saw. Incredibly grateful and absolutely a lesson learned.

Freak accident: I bought a used lesco walk behind that didn't have a working reverse gear so I would use gravity to assist...gun it on the uphill and then let go and as it rolled back i would maneuver it to the next line.

that thing was heavy af

Was still learning how to use the damn thing on my hillside yard and as I was working a particularly steep incline I had braced my foot against the base of a tree to anchor myself and briefly let off the gas and the damn thing rolled backwards and pinned me to the tree and the engine cut off.

It landed right against my chest and knocked the breath out of me and I had no strength to move it and couldn't catch my breath. Nobody around and I was starting to freak from the claustrophobia but finally managed to free myself.

Got rid of it the same day. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone what happened.

Went to Hawaii in 1990, thought I would be able to surf without having any prior experience. I was 18 and a great swimmer and felt it really can't be that hard, I saw some girls out there doing it and thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake, 6-foot waves don't look very big from the beach, but they look huge when your out there with just your head above water. Those waves pounded me into submission, never got up on the board to try, they kept taking me down to the ocean floor which wasn't very deep, probably 5 to 6 feet deep but man were those waves powerful. I thought I was going to die, every time I'd come up from the bottom another one was behind it. I went from scared to having a peace and thought that well, I guess this is how I'm going out. There was finally a break in the waves, and I swam my butt off to get back to shore. I didn't try that again and had a newfound respect for the power of water.

I'm a retired FF and have had many close calls in fires and on the interstate with vehicle accidents. We were on the roof of a house ventilating a fire when the roof became weak and my partner fell through the roof up to his waist, I grabbed him and pulled him out. Was in a flashover situation in one house fire, that's when the temp in the room is super heated and the gasses and particles in the air light on fire, the whole room flashed on us, we had went to our backs and opened up the nozzle to the widest fog pattern we had and made it out, luckily we didn't make it too far in before it happened. Several times we've been working vehicle accidents on the side of the road/interstate and passerby's almost hit us by not paying attention to what they were doing.

Using the 3rd Baseline Bathrooms at Alex Box during a day game in June.
It's like a 120 degree sauna in them thangs.

I was kiteboarding at Bonnabel Boat Launch and did something stupid. I was slammed onto the rip rap breakwater face first. It took me a couple of seconds to get my wits, then I thought I must be seriously hurt and just could not feel it due to shock.

I slid off the breakwater and made my way back to the launch and called it a day. I was wearing a vest that is part flotation and part protection. Well, I’ll swear by that vest, because I had almost no injuries from that - just a sore shoulder I didn’t even notice until the next time I tried to work out, but it healed in six months on its own. I felt very lucky and have dialed it back since then.

I’ve told the story here many times. That was a really tough day for my family in what had already been a really tough couple of weeks.

December 30th, 2015. Drunk driver crossed the center line, I managed to avoid a head on, but he went down the side of my truck, and when we went past, my vehicle was jerked to the left (both my drivers side tires were shredded), and I went across the road and into a tree.
Truck drifted back down the hill and settled back in the road. I was unconscious for a minute, but when I came to the dust from the airbags was in the air, and I thought the truck was on fire. My wife was screaming. My door was pushed in and my hands and face were hurting, I couldn't see out of my left eye. I scrambled to unbuckle my seat belt, and reach across my screaming wife to unbuckle hers and managed to get her door open and pushed her out. I crawled out behind her.
Cars were stopping now and someone called 911. The other driver also went across the road into a field and rolled his tahoe. Police report says he crawled out of his sun roof and ran off into the dark waving a gun. He turned himself in 4 days later.
We went to the ER. My hand was banged up from the door pushed in on me, and the airbag got me in the eye. Also bruised from the seat belt. Wife had similar injuries, but we both recovered.
She still has PTSD when we see cars drifting into our lane.
