As soon as he says “would you like your kid to play on our team?”

Seems like to me the OP is talking about basketball and all the responses think he is talking about baseball.

Grind through the season and put in the same effort that yall started the team with, and then at seasons end make your decision and tell the coach. No shame in walking away and reprioritizing life/goals as long as your task is complete. Whatever you do, don't let your son quit before the season ends, and don't let him laydown on his team bc he knows he's possibly moving on. There were 2 times in my life that I wanted to quit teams and my folks wouldn't let me. Turned out to be 2 of the best lessons I ever learned related to resiliency, hard work, and dedication.

First time was All-Star Baseball and I wanted to quit because a new kid moved in and took my spot, it was my 1st humbling experience of riding the bench. Turned out that we became great friends and battled for that position for the next 10 years, pushing each other to be the best we could.

The other time was HS freshman football. I didn't play football until then so it was a totally new thing to me. I was asked to go up to varsity and practice with them, the only freshman to do so. They beat the hell out of me day in and day out. I still cringe looking back at it. I was going to freshman practice and then rolling into the 2nd half of varsity practice when freshman ended, about a good 4 hours of football a day. After about 2 weeks of it I was laying in bed and could barely move I was hurting so bad. My mom came in to ask me if I needed anything and I told her I was thinking about quitting football. She looked me dead in the face, with a face of disappointment and said "You can quit when the season's over, but you won't quit on your team until you finish what you started" Turned out that I started playing varsity as a freshman halfway through the season, fell in love with the game, and went onto college and grind my way to a decent college ball career.

Those lessons taught me more than I probably can ever type or put into words.

That’s probably not basketball unless it’s old school girls basketball?

OHhhhh the middle school comment made me think basketball. Middle schools in LA generally don't have baseball.

He’d never quit, he’s actually going to play with both clubs in town finish out the season. Try to get them both to regionals.

He’s been a one sport kid, but he’s looking to expand that when he goes to mid+HS. It’s a 6 year all boys school, so he’s really looking forward to playing everything he can. He’s excelled under pressure in this sport, no reason to believe he can’t in others.

Jeez! It's fricking soccer, not even a real sport like baseball. Again, its fricking soccer.

RA'd to move to soccer board.

It’s by position, not by spirit or leadership...he’s the middle, the distributor.

Absolutely other kids want his spot, most kids hands will fly up to replace him.

You can tell how athletic the sport is by the shoes they wear, WTF is up with baseball players sloshing around in those terrible looking boots they wear?

Mine had been playing since 4 and quit this year at 12, the coach came over to the house "twice" and tried to talk him into continuing.

I think my son burned out, he says baseball is boring

My son’s 12 as well...this is the age. 4 games every weekend just isn’t something he wants to do anymore. One game on Thursday night, sign him up. Those medals that used to drive him, he’ll wear them for the pictures and then he stuff it in his bag. It’s just run it’s course.

He’s not tired of the sport, he’d be a 5 year letterman if they’d let him.

But we typically make fun of both the kid and dad with the team and there's been a few instances of my players getting in trouble for bullying the kid in school or whatever.

Don't quit the team until the kid is at MLB spring training.

I mean, that's the only reason you had the kid play travel ball, right? Quitting now just means you wasted all that time and money.

How is it a troll he probably has 30 tournament medals. He used to wear them until he hung them on this little rack we got him, now I dig them out of his bag to hang them up there.

He’d love to win state or win for his school team, but the luster of weekend tournaments has worn off.

My daughter is on a travel soccer team and I am in the same boat as you. I am the assistant coach and she is one of the weakest on the team. There are 21 girls on the team. She might get to play 5 minutes per match if that. She wants to quit now and I am thinking about letting her with about 4 tournaments left in the season.
