The movie Donnie Brasco does the best job of portraying how the vast majority of mobsters actually lived and worked. They were basically broke dick criminals breaking into parking meters and pulling stick ups on trucks trying to scratch out a living. They were no different than common street thugs today except they wore suits and ate good.

I accidentally left out the Philadelphia family in that litany of Mafia organizations I mentioned earlier. This was the Angelo Bruno Family which then became the Scarfo mob.
