It depends on how much I have and where I am going. If I have less than a quarter of a tank and I am going somewhere that is a relatively longer distance then I fill up to be safe.
If I have less than a quarter of a tank and I am going across town then I will likely get gas the next time I go somewhere.

I wait until the gas light comes on.
I can go about 50 miles with the light on til I run out.

I usually wait till the dash tells me under 100 miles to empty. Normally a little under 1/4 tank. 37 gallon tank on my current truck.

1/4. Gas is also used to keep the fueling system cool. When running near empty the fuel recirculates so quickly that the fuel pump runs hotter. I've always filled after a 1/4 tank and have never had to replace a fuel pump. I'm not as familiar with the newer model cars but I doubt if it's any different.

When the light comes on if I'm driving in the city, or any time before I go on a 100+ mile trip. My shite eats gas like BabyTac's wife eats cake

Drove 20 miles in hybrid mode once after the gauge said I had 0 miles left. Between Tunica and wherever else the nearest civilization is south of there. Who knew there wouldn't be a gas station for 40+ miles.

I like to wait until I only have 30-60 miles left in the tank and the light is about to come on or has just come on.
You aren't doing your fuel pump any favors.

I fill mine up at home. I have a 1979 Lada that gets 37 hectares per hekat of vodka.

About 15 miles after my low fuel light comes on.
