re: When do you put gas in your vehicle?

Usually around a 1/4 tank. I don't know that much about car maintenance but have heard some engines can have issues when having low gas levels (happened to my 2005 Jeep years ago). I try to fill up before it gets too low.

I wait until the miles until empty alert switch over to just "Low Fuel".

In old cars, do it often.
Somewhat related, it is amazing where they put gas tank filler lids in old car. 1944 Ford jeep - under the drivers seat (no gas gauge, just look down into the tank).
1957 Chevrolet - move part of the tail light on the fin to the side to put in the gas.
Old Model A's - gas tank filler is in the back of the hood. When there is a gas tank related leak, it usually means gas enters the cab.

Usually around 1/4 of a tank.
Gives me enough time to slam a 40 while it fills up

I stop every Friday morning to fill up and grab some breakfast. Usually have around 1/4 tank left.

I usually let it get pretty low. If I told you that I haven't driven miles past the 0 miles to E warning then I would be lying.

No less than 1/8. Got stuck in traffic once with less and didn't make it to the gas station. I must have walked 10 miles half of that with a plastic gas can and vowed never again.

Model A had a gravity feed carb, gas tank had to be behind and higher than the carb. They also had cruise control.

Mine is a quarter inch below the out line, so I guess today

You should also ask if the person was a broke college kid before or not

What is it with our wives driving until there are only fumes left? Mine does the same thing. If I ask her about it she is oblivious. She never noticed the needle getting to E. Or the miles to empty getting to single digits. Or the Low Fuel warning come on.
What's worse though, is when we get in her car to go somewhere and as we are getting in, she says "oh- we'll need to stop and get some gas on the way." By which she means "the indicator says I have 1.2 miles left till empty." That means she saw she was running out of gas, drove past a gas station .5 miles from our neighborhood, and decided naah, I'll wait until I'm going somewhere my next trip to fill up. Never ceases to amaze and aggravate me.

If you don't coast into the gas station on fumes then you're just a pussy.
To answer the OP, typically when I know I won't get to my destination with what I have.

I'm no mechanic so no idea if this is true but I've always heard that it is best not to run out your tank on a regular basis before fueling because doing so pulls settled residue into the fuel lines from the bottom of the tank.
This affects the downstream fuel system eventually.
No idea if true but it makes sense.
