Do you have a mileage benchmark? Is it of desire to upgrade or attractiveness to a new model? Desire to ensure safety and dependability and what does that look like?

I’m struggling mostly because I just see a vehicle as something to get from point a to point b. Never desired anything nice to overspend on. Never really looking to upgrade. I typically have had a 200,000 benchmark to move on.

My current truck has 193,000 and runs great. Paid $16k for it used with 70,000 miles 7 years ago. Should I drive it until it dies and donate it to a junkyard or start looking for a similar deal? I’m thinking the former.

What is the OTs method for deciding on a new vehicle?

smells like a subtle brag thread. keep driving your damn truck if you only care about point a to b.

When there is an almost continual cost for keeping it running (especially if that cost is anywhere near what I would be paying on a monthly note).

The wheels fall off or the engine goes kaput, although these days it might be better to replace the engine

I find time is more of a factor than mileage. My experience has been 10-12 years is when things start becoming a PITA with repairs.

I get a new vehicle when I start to lose faith in my vehicle getting my family through a road trip.

My vehicle: when repairs cause too much inconvenience

Wife's vehicle: when I hear loud, continuous noise from inside the house. Typically every model style change.

As soon as I get to 10,000 miles. It just feels dirty to me then.

Only when it becomes very difficult to find replacement parts.

The car I had in high school and college I broke the handle that would raise and lower the window. At that time I could not find a replacement ( this was before internet, B.I.) . So I just used a pair of vice grips.

I had a 10 year old truck that was paid off and the transmission started slipping so I traded it in for a newer model. I didn't really want to trade it in but I didn't want to sink a bunch of money into it either.

I’m at 160k on my Acura. I buy and drive for 10 years+. I look at cost over 10+ years and try to keep it at a certain percentage of income over that span. I have my eyes on a beautiful new car now . After I pay off my son’s car and my last daughter ( sorry no pics ) is out of her sorority and college, I’ll treat myself to it and drive it into the ground.

The truth is we have been trading out when it needs tires, so for us that's bout every 5 years.
