- About 70% of Americans have less than $1000 in savings (data from 2019).

- 45% have $0 in savings.

-10 million people filed for unemployment in the last 2 weeks. More will file this week.

- Stimulus checks aren't in people's hands yet.

With so many people not bringing in any income, no stimulus yet, and savings being so low, when will large numbers of folks run out of money and start taking alternative measures to survive? I'm surprised it hasn't started happening already.

And the paltry stimulus checks are still a week or two away and will be from enough for a lot of people.

It is about to get interesting. The government is slow to get this money out to individuals and it doesn’t seem banks/truly small businesses know how to do the SBA loans.

When 70% of people have less than $1k saved it's a systemic failure, imo.

To the OP: the unemployment money and stimulus money has bought us a month for most people, maybe 2 if people stretch it. But that's about it.

The unemployment money actually seems like the smartest thing the government did in all this.

Good for you. Responsible people are the foundation of society. Now I’d encourage you to Share as your resources allow . Help your brother, your cousin, your friend. That’s how we get through a prolonged economic collapse. Help good people who need help in any way you can. Much better than rioting.

For most, $1200 will be spent in a week as I assume they’re already charging cards and getting in the hole financially. Get the check, immediately buy groceries and gas, pay back mortgage or rent, money gone. This definitely won’t help much at all. It’s going to get really ugly the longer this goes on.

Have a up vote Sir. We are doing what we can here. What pisses me off is that Ochsner hospital has sent me a letter asking for funding for their lay off staff, doctors and nurses. Really, WTF?

I think most people who can do something are doing what they can, like supporting a local restaurant doing take out, for example. Or donating to various funds set up to benefit out of work musicians or restaurant workers.

I am more concerned about the point where a gigantic amount of people run out of money and there isn't enough charity or government assistance to keep feeding them all. Will that happen or is that just too farfetched?

To me, at times like this, we are our brothers keepers. After Katrina, I had 7 extra people living in my house for as long as 6 months. 3 of the people were friends of one of my sisters I never knew before hand.
