I had dial up first, lived out in the country. Then tried satellite for a while, was about what you would expect, then we finally got DSL.
They have fiber to the box at the entrance to our house, but have never increased speeds.

Probably 1997 and it was a WebTV because a starter PC was like $2,500 back then and I couldn't afford one.

Somewhere around here... old school dial up.
Used to play Command & Conquer against friends, but if someone dialed in the game would get interrupted.
And dial-in Juno e-mail. Good times.

In 1987, I got a 300 baud modem for my Commodore 64. I would visit different BBS's and download games illegally. That was the thing back then. Then I thought I was a big shite when I upgraded to a wopping 1200 baud modem. There was a Commodore 64 version of AOL called "Q Link" that I joined. First "online" experience with chat rooms. Then, joined AOL a few years after that. Family also had an IBM PC that we used that had a modem in which I could jump online in the early 90's (when the WWW made its appearance to consumers).
To answer your question, a lot of us older posters didn't "get internet" in our homes. We used modems.

We had Prodigy in 1994. Before that we literally had a Usenet book where we would dial into individual sites which took forever and were very basic.
